New Book Revives Oral Tradition of Old Podgorica
A new publication titled “Narodne pjesme, anegdote i umotvorine” is set to preserve the oral traditions of old Podgorica and Montenegro. Released in 2025 by the Sveti Petar Cetinjski Foundation, this book serves as the fifth installment dedicated to the works and legacy of Ilija N. Zlatičan (1860–1941), a prominent chronicler of Montenegrin oral literature.
The book presents a rich tapestry of folklore, encapsulating the spirit and daily life of the region. Compiled by Zlatko V. Zlatičan, a descendant of the author and a long-time researcher of his work, this publication is the culmination of over three decades of meticulous research. Zlatičan gathered folk songs, anecdotes, proverbs, and other expressions from Podgorica, Zeta, and various parts of Montenegro, including its coastal areas. Much of this material had previously been scattered across old magazines, newspapers, archives, and collections, with some unfortunately lost to time.
Preserving the Authentic Voice
One of the standout features of this collection is its authenticity. Zlatko V. Zlatičan has deliberately retained archaic expressions, the old Podgorica dialect, and Turkish influences. By avoiding modern stylistic changes, he has ensured that readers can experience the original flavor of the language and mentality from which these works emerged. This approach not only provides a literary record but also serves as a powerful linguistic and cultural document.
The anthology includes both male and female folk songs, heroic epic poems written in decasyllabic verse, and anecdotes. Notably, many anecdotes focus on King Nikola, contributing to the cultural memory of Montenegro. The collection highlights folk wisdom, humor, and resilience, demonstrating how traditional narratives can uplift spirits even in challenging times.
A Legacy Worth Remembering
Ilija N. Zlatičan, known as a significant figure in Montenegrin oral literature, is often compared to the famed collector Vuk Karadžić. His work has historically been overlooked, but recent efforts have brought renewed attention to his contributions through the publication of his complete legacy.
“Narodne pjesme, anegdote i umotvorine” is not only an essential resource for literary historians and researchers; it is also a valuable asset for the general public. It stands as a testament to the cultural identity and collective memory of the people of Montenegro. The book serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of individual contributions in the fight against cultural amnesia, capturing a vibrant period, language, and spirit that resonate even today.
This latest publication enriches the understanding of Montenegro’s heritage and invites readers to engage with a past that continues to speak volumes.
