When Laura Wood decided to adopt her husband’s surname after their wedding in July 2025, she sparked a wave of laughter among friends and family. Having been together for 14 years, Laura and her husband, Danny, who met at university in Preston, took the significant step of marriage, prompting Laura to contemplate her name change.

Laura, now known as Mrs. Laura Large, found herself at the centre of humour due to the potential for her new surname to generate amusing interpretations. Friends had playfully suggested combining their surnames into a double-barrelled format, such as ‘Large-Wood’ or ‘Wood-Large’. While the first combination might raise a few eyebrows, the irony of Laura’s stature—standing at just under 5 feet—adds to the comedic allure of her new identity.

Reflecting on her decision, the 32-year-old nail technician shared, “I used to find the idea of taking his name quite funny. It felt surreal because us getting married was a way off, so it just felt like a joke.” Despite her initial reservations, Laura ultimately chose to embrace the name change, stating, “When we did get married, I wasn’t sure if I was going to change it on social media, but I thought, sod it, I’ll do it for the plot.”

Beyond the laughter, Laura highlighted the sentimental value attached to the surname. Danny, the only son in his family, expressed a desire to carry on his surname. Laura added, “When we were looking at all the options, Danny said he really likes his surname. I also knew we wanted to have the same name for our kids.”

Laura’s decision has resonated widely, particularly after she shared her name change on TikTok, where it garnered over 34,000 reactions. The response underscores not only the humour of her situation but also the public’s engagement with her story.

As she embarks on this new chapter, Laura, who has also launched a podcast titled Nails and Yap, feels a deep connection to her new name. “It feels nice having the same name – it’s like having a connection and makes us feel closer,” she said. Her experience serves as a reminder of the personal significance that names can carry, blending tradition, humour, and modernity into a unique narrative.
