NORAD Tracks Santa’s Journey: A 70-Year Holiday Tradition
Each Christmas Eve, families around the world participate in a time-honored tradition: tracking Santa Claus as he delivers gifts globally. This year marks the 70th anniversary of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) officially monitoring Santa’s journey, a unique blend of holiday spirit and military precision.
The tradition began in 1955 when a misprinted advertisement directed children to call a military hotline instead of Santa’s direct line. Since then, NORAD has embraced the role, using its extensive resources to track Santa’s travels. This year, the organization is prepared to handle a surge of inquiries from excited children and adults alike.
Engaging the Public on Christmas Eve
On December 24, from 04:00 to midnight Mountain Standard Time, over 1,000 volunteers will be stationed at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs to answer calls from eager children. Last year, the hotline received approximately 380,000 calls, with many children anxious to confirm that Santa will arrive only if they are asleep.
For the first time, NORAD has enhanced accessibility by launching a website where users can track Santa’s journey in nine languages, including English and Japanese. This feature aims to support individuals outside North America who want to join in the festive fun.
How NORAD Tracks Santa
Using a combination of radar, satellites, and aircraft, NORAD applies its year-round surveillance capabilities to monitor Santa’s flight. A spokesperson explained that Rudolph’s nose emits a heat signature akin to a missile, which NORAD’s satellites can detect. This whimsical approach adds an element of excitement to the tracking process.
Throughout the decades, NORAD’s Santa tracking initiative has become a beloved holiday tradition, uniting families and fostering a sense of wonder during the festive season. As the organization continues this legacy, it remains committed to keeping the magic of Santa alive, ensuring that he is tracked every step of the way.
This year, as families settle in for the night, they can take comfort in knowing that NORAD is on the lookout, helping to maintain the enchantment of Christmas for generations to come.
