Norway Faces Germany in World Handball Championship Final
The stage is set in Rotterdam for the final of the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship, where Norway, the reigning Olympic and European champion, faces Germany. The match, scheduled for 17:30 local time, will determine who claims the coveted world title. Both teams have demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the tournament, each boasting an unblemished record with eight victories.
Norway has solidified its dominance in women’s handball, expanding its legacy since winning its first title in 1998. The team has collected an impressive total of 27 medals over the past 27 years, including three Olympic golds, four world championships, and a record ten European titles. Should they secure victory against Germany, they will become the most successful nation in World Championship history, surpassing Russia’s four titles.
The Norwegian squad has been formidable, winning matches with an average margin of 15.75 goals. They have defeated strong competitors like Sweden and Brazil decisively, with a notable semifinal performance against the Netherlands, where they triumphed 35:25. Nora Merk, a key player for Norway, expressed the team’s determination, stating, “We came here to stay on top, and as long as the team is this good, I won’t stop.”
In contrast, Germany aims to reclaim its former glory, having last won the World Championship in 1993. Since then, they have secured two bronze medals but have struggled to regain their place among the elite. Their path to the final included a significant 29:23 victory over France in the semifinals, securing their fifth World Championship medal. Captain Antje Del acknowledges their underdog status but remains optimistic, saying, “We’re prepared. In this sport, the team with the greater spirit often prevails.”
The final represents more than just a quest for the championship; it is also an opportunity for Germany to promote women’s handball in a country where men’s matches typically draw larger crowds. Del highlighted the importance of this tournament in raising the profile of the sport, stating, “We needed some success to fulfill our campaign with heart and love. We’ve achieved that, but our work isn’t done yet.”
As the clock ticks down to the final, Norwegian players are favored to win, but Germany’s team spirit and recent form suggest a thrilling match ahead. The outcome will not only crown a new world champion but will also encapsulate the growing excitement and competitiveness within women’s handball. With the eyes of the world on Rotterdam, both teams are ready to leave everything on the court for a chance at glory.
