Podgorica Celebrates Its Heritage and Future as a Thriving City

Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, celebrated its rich heritage and modern achievements on December 19, emphasizing its identity as a historical center. This date marks a symbolic occasion for the city, which has evolved from a Roman municipium called Duklja to the birthplace of Stefan Nemanja, the founder of the Nemanjić dynasty. The message was delivered by Aleksandar Mandić, the President of the Assembly of Montenegro and leader of the Nove srpske demokratije.

In his address, Mandić highlighted the significance of Podgorica’s recognition as “Nemanja’s city,” reflecting its deep historical roots and cultural importance. He noted that the city has recently earned the prestigious title of European Capital of Youth, showcasing the vitality and resilience of its population.

Mandić stated, “This significant date provides an opportunity to proudly reflect on the historical milestones that have shaped Podgorica, as well as to celebrate its ongoing development and progress.” He pointed out that the modern Podgorica embodies a dynamic European city, a symbol of rapid growth and comprehensive urban transformation.

The President emphasized the advancements made in infrastructure, culture, and the economy, which affirm Podgorica’s role as a driver of Montenegro’s overall development. He remarked that a shared vision and committed dedication continue to shape Podgorica as a city that embodies pride for all its inhabitants.

“This is a city of open opportunities, one that honors its traditions while boldly stepping into the future,” Mandić said. He expressed confidence that Podgorica will continue to evolve as a place where all residents can realize their ideas, dreams, and ambitions. Mandić concluded by stating that each subsequent Main City Day will offer even more reasons for pride, joy, and optimism among its citizens.
