Prince William Takes on Role as Patron of SAS Regimental Association
Prince William has been appointed as the new patron of the SAS Regimental Association (SASRA), the charitable arm of the United Kingdom’s elite special forces unit. This appointment marks a significant milestone in the Prince’s military career, reflecting his longstanding dedication to the armed forces.
The announcement comes as the 43-year-old prepares to serve as the primary figurehead of the association, which focuses on supporting the welfare of serving personnel, veterans, and their families. In his role, William will be instrumental in raising vital funds and promoting the interests of those who have served in the Special Air Service (SAS).
William’s military journey began in 2005 when he joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst after graduating from university. He completed a rigorous 44-week course as an Officer Cadet, earning his commission as an officer in December 2006. Following his training, he served with the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) as a second lieutenant, where he commanded a troop of four Scimitar light tanks. His leadership abilities earned him a promotion to lieutenant within a year.
In 2008, the Prince expanded his military experience through attachments with the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. The skills he acquired during these periods were pivotal, as they later enabled him to serve as a search and rescue pilot and a volunteer air ambulance pilot. Currently, he holds various military titles, including Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps (AAC) and Colonel of the Welsh Guards.
William’s new role with SASRA is particularly significant for the regiment, as it provides essential royal support for the long-term care of soldiers and their families. His appointment has been described as a “proud achievement,” reinforcing the connection between the royal family and the elite military unit.
The SAS Regimental Association plays a crucial role in ensuring the welfare of its members through various initiatives, including fundraising for veterans and their dependents. With Prince William at the helm, the association is poised to enhance its outreach and support efforts, ultimately strengthening the bond within the SAS community.
Through this appointment, Prince William not only continues his commitment to military service but also highlights the importance of supporting those who have served their country. His leadership will be vital in advancing the association’s mission and ensuring that the sacrifices of SAS personnel and their families are recognized and honored.
