Royal Family’s Festive Gatherings: Inside the Sleeping Arrangements
The Royal Family celebrated Christmas this year at Sandringham, where many members gathered to spend the holiday with King Charles and Queen Camilla. On December 25, 2023, the family welcomed notable guests including Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their three children, as well as Prince Edward and his family. The guest list also featured Mike and Zara Tindall, along with Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
While the festive celebrations occurred at the historic Sandringham House, not all royal attendees opted to stay overnight. Some members chose to lodge at nearby accommodations on the estate or return to their own homes. For those who did remain at Sandringham, the sleeping arrangements reportedly lack the opulence often associated with royal life.
Unconventional Sleeping Arrangements
According to royal expert Rebecca English, the accommodations can be quite modest. She disclosed that guests sometimes share rooms in beds referred to as “fish finger” style, a term suggesting that the sleeping arrangements are less than luxurious. Sandringham House is said to have capacity for only 16 to 18 people, prompting some family members to stay in staff quarters that have occasionally been repurposed into guest bedrooms.
English noted, “In previous years, I’ve been told that they’ve actually had to kick staff out of their quarters. And Edward and Sophie were put in some of the staff quarters because they had nowhere else to stay.” This insight challenges the perception of royal grandeur, revealing a more practical side to their holiday traditions.
The Prince and Princess of Wales typically spend Christmas Day at Sandringham with their children but reportedly return to their residence, Anmer Hall, for the night. Other guests may stay at various properties within the expansive Sandringham Estate while some enjoy the comforts of the main house.
Looking Ahead to the New Year
As the festive period continues, King Charles is expected to remain at Sandringham for several more days before royal engagements commence in the New Year. The gatherings serve as a time for relaxation and family bonding, albeit under less-than-glamorous conditions for some members of the Royal Family.
The contrasting nature of these sleeping arrangements highlights a unique aspect of royal life, where tradition and practicality intersect during the holiday season. As the family reflects on their time together, it remains clear that the spirit of Christmas continues to thrive within the royal household, regardless of the accommodations.
