The Russian Embassy in Montenegro has issued a response to a letter from the editorial team of the newspaper Pobjeda, which stated that the embassy’s claims regarding the alleged spread of Russophobia were not substantiated by any examples. The embassy’s communication highlights its concerns over the portrayal of Russia in recent publications and asserts that Pobjeda has increased its number of anti-Russian articles.

The embassy initially claimed that Pobjeda and its online platform have heightened anti-Russian sentiments through selective reporting. In its letter, the embassy called on the editorial team to reconsider examples it believes demonstrate unreliable facts and false claims, which they argue encourage anti-Russian feelings among readers.

Among the accusations, the embassy cited statements made by Friedrich Merz, who suggested that Russia is a European country and that the EU must find balance in its relations with Moscow. This assertion prompted the embassy to question the shift in rhetoric and whether EU actions, influenced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, are reshaping its stance towards Russia.

The embassy pointed to several specific articles from Pobjeda that it contends portray Russia negatively, including claims about Russia’s preference for aggression over diplomacy, and accusations of regional destabilization linked to Russian actions. They highlighted the narrative of young Ukrainian men being mobilized into the Russian armed forces and referenced broader issues of war crimes and oppression under the current regime.

In its letter, the embassy expressed its hope that Pobjeda would not perceive the presented evidence as political or diplomatic pressure, but rather as compelling arguments for an unbiased and professional assessment of the embassy’s previous communications.

The Russian Embassy also mentioned the significance of international isolation for Russia, describing it as a political, economic, diplomatic, cultural, and sports-related phenomenon that has yielded results and should continue. They referenced over fifty incidents throughout Europe since 2022, attributing these to Russian disinformation campaigns and cyber-attacks designed to sow chaos.

The letter concluded by expressing gratitude for the attention given to statements from Russian officials and reiterated the embassy’s openness to personal communication with the editorial team of Pobjeda.

The ongoing dialogue reflects the complex and often contentious relationship between Russia and Montenegro, as well as the broader geopolitical tensions affecting the region. As both sides navigate these issues, the discourse surrounding media representation and national sentiment remains a critical aspect of their interactions.
