Tributes Emerge for Simon Dougan, Influential NI Chef at 54
Simon Dougan, a prominent figure in the Northern Irish hospitality industry and founder of the catering company Yellow Door, has passed away at the age of 54. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and the community, who remember him as a “generous” and “wickedly funny” chef.
Known for his passion for cooking and dedication to his craft, Dougan’s legacy extends beyond his culinary skills. He bravely shared his battle with pancreatic cancer, during which he raised £25,000 for the local charity NIPANC. His efforts significantly contributed to raising awareness about the disease and supporting those affected by it.
A Lasting Impact on the Community
In a heartfelt message posted on social media, the Yellow Door team expressed their sorrow at his passing. They described Simon as a chef “like no other,” emphasizing his warmth, humor, and commitment to serving “proper plates of food.” They stated, “Though he’s no longer here in the way we wish, Simon remains with us in the stories we share, the things he taught us, and the warmth he has left behind.”
Dougan established Yellow Door as a fine dining restaurant in Guildford in 1992. Over the years, he transformed it into an award-winning catering company and opened several deli stores throughout Northern Ireland. His work championed local food heritage and earned him an honorary MBE in 2017.
NIPANC also paid tribute to Dougan, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the death of Simon and send our heartfelt condolences to Jilly and all the family.” They highlighted his role as an extraordinary advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness, noting, “His impact will be felt for years to come.”
