Trump Honors Lionel Messi and Inter Miami at White House Celebration
Lionel Messi and his teammates from Inter Miami received a warm welcome from former President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, celebrating their victory in the 2023 MLS Cup. The team triumphed over the Vancouver Whitecaps in December to secure the Major League Soccer title, with Messi earning the title of league MVP for the second consecutive year.
During the ceremony, Trump praised Messi’s remarkable achievement, stating, “Leo, you came in and you won, and that’s something very hard to do, very, very unusual and frankly, there’s a lot more pressure put on you than anyone would know.” Messi, who joined Inter Miami in 2023, did not make remarks at the event, but his presence was highlighted by a gathering of notable figures, including teammates Luis Suárez, Tadeo Allende, and Rodrigo De Paul.
Significant Attendance and Historical Context
The event marked a notable occasion as Inter Miami became the first MLS team to be honored at the White House during Trump’s administration. Also present were MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House’s World Cup task force. Retired baseball star Alex Rodriguez and various members of Trump’s cabinet also attended.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, previously led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and is anticipated to compete again this summer in the upcoming tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As the global soccer showcase draws near, tensions have risen due to recent geopolitical events, including conflicts involving Iran and unrest in Mexico following the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera. Trump opened the ceremony by briefly addressing the situation with Iran but did not directly discuss the implications for the World Cup. Following military actions by the United States and Israel, Iran’s soccer official Mehdi Taj expressed doubts about the country’s participation, stating they could not look to the tournament with “hope.”
Reflections on Soccer’s Impact and Future Aspirations
Trump commented on the legendary Brazilian player Pele, reminiscing about watching him play with the New York Cosmos. He then turned to Messi and posed the question to the audience, “You may be better than Pele, who’s better?”
Inter Miami’s owner, Jorge Mas, reflected on the team’s influence, stating, “We can play with the big boys, we can play with the heavyweights. Our league can be one of the top leagues in the world.” He expressed hope that this celebration would not be the last, envisioning future victories and continued recognition.
This visit marks Messi’s first official trip to the White House. He had previously been invited by the Biden administration to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom but was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.
After the White House visit, Inter Miami will continue their engagement in the region, with a match scheduled against D.C. United on Saturday. The team’s achievements and the recognition at such a high level underscore the growing prominence of soccer in the United States.
