Pest control expert CJ Palmer, founder of Nature Guard Pest & Lawn, highlights a straightforward method to deter these unwelcome guests: utilizing specific plants that rats find repulsive.

Rats possess a highly developed sense of smell, which plays a crucial role in their behavior. According to Palmer, “When dealing with a rat infestation, it is essential to understand effective methods of deterring them. One approach is to utilise odours that rats find repulsive, as they rely heavily on their sense of smell.” Since their eyesight is limited, these rodents depend on scent to locate food and avoid predators, steering clear of areas they cannot properly investigate through smell.

Fortunately, homeowners do not need to rely on expensive rat repellents. Several natural deterrents can effectively keep rodents away from properties and gardens.

Peppermint: A Natural Deterrent

Among the most effective solutions is peppermint. Its sharp, spicy aroma irritates both mice and rats, making it a popular choice among homeowners. Palmer explains, “Peppermint oil is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly solution, making it a safe alternative to chemical rat repellents. It is derived from the peppermint plant, which contains high levels of menthol, a compound that rats find extremely unpleasant.”

To utilize peppermint as a deterrent, homeowners can plant mint throughout their gardens or soak cotton wool balls in peppermint oil and place them strategically around their properties. It is essential to replace the cotton wool balls weekly to maintain the scent’s potency, helping to prevent rodents from entering homes.

Garlic and Eucalyptus: Additional Barriers Against Rodents

Garlic also serves as an effective natural repellent. According to Palmer, “As a natural rat repellent, garlic emits a powerful scent that is known to repel rats and other pests.” While appealing to humans, the strong odour of garlic contains sulphur compounds that irritate rats, driving them away from treated areas. It is advisable to apply garlic oil solutions in outdoor spaces, as the pungent smell can linger indoors.

Another potent option is eucalyptus. The oil-rich leaves of eucalyptus trees contain a compound called eucalyptol, responsible for their characteristic scent. This compound is known for its antimicrobial and insect-repellent properties. Palmer explains, “Eucalyptus essential oil, derived from the leaves of the tree, has been used for various purposes, including pest control.”

Homeowners can create a simple homemade spray using equal parts eucalyptus oil and water. This mixture can be applied around windows, doorways, and other potential entry points for rodents, including cupboards and beneath furniture.
