A care home worker from Wrexham, Emmanuel Dela Cruz, has been honored with the Smile Award for his exceptional efforts in enriching the lives of residents at the Bodlondeb Care Home. The award is determined by votes from both staff and residents of the Pendine Park care organization, recognizing individuals who go above and beyond to brighten others’ lives.

At 37 years old and a father of two, Dela Cruz was praised for his warmth, energy, and dedication. His manager, Arlene Elano, expressed her admiration, stating, “Emmanuel is the heart of Bodlondeb. He’s always smiling, always singing and always ready to help. He truly represents what Pendine is all about.” Elano highlighted the sense of community at Bodlondeb, describing it as a family where Dela Cruz exemplifies positivity and support.

When Dela Cruz was nominated for the award, it was clear he had made a significant impact. Elano added, “You can ask anyone here and they’ll say the same thing. Emmanuel is a positive spirit and a role model.” His commitment and dedication to his work have not gone unnoticed, with Elano stating, “I and the family here at Bodlondeb are so proud of him. Emmanuel is a person with a great heart who inspires all of us.”

Background and Journey to Care Work

Originally from the Philippines, Dela Cruz moved to the UK four years ago. He previously worked as a supervisor at a Primark store before transitioning into the care sector, encouraged by his wife, a nurse. He recounted, “I met Arlene at a Filipino community gathering in Wrexham and asked her about the possibility of working in care, and she offered me the opportunity to join Pendine Park.”

While initially apprehensive about this career shift, Dela Cruz found the training provided by Pendine Park to be invaluable. He noted, “Pendine provide very good training on how to deal with people, including those with dementia.” Since joining Bodlondeb, he has embraced activities such as playing dominoes, learning strategies from residents who excel at the game.

Dela Cruz balances his professional commitments with family life, raising two children aged five and two. He enjoys hiking and has a passion for music. “People from the Philippines like to sing, so I sing for our residents,” he said. His performances, particularly of Elvis songs, resonate well with the residents, even those with dementia, enhancing their overall well-being.

Celebrating Contributions to Care

The Smile Awards were organized by Sarah Edwards, Pendine Park’s consultant artist in residence, who emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of staff members. “We encourage everyone to vote, and the Smile Awards are very popular. It’s always important to celebrate the great work we all do,” she remarked.

Dela Cruz’s recognition not only highlights his personal achievements but also the broader culture of care and community within Pendine Park. His story serves as an inspiring example of how dedication and compassion can significantly impact the lives of others.
