Wrexham’s Mevo Wins National Innovation Award for Sustainable Cement
A Wrexham-based company specializing in ultra-low carbon cement has achieved significant recognition within the UK construction industry. Material Evolution (Mevo) secured the National Innovation Award at the 2025 Constructing Excellence Awards, following its victory in the Welsh regional category earlier this year. The judges commended the firm’s “bold and game-changing” approach to sustainable cement production.
Mevo employs a combination of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and alkali fusion technology to create a high-performance binder known as MevoCem. This innovative process allows the firm to utilize industrial by-products without the need for heat, resulting in a remarkable reduction of carbon emissions by approximately 85% compared to traditional Portland cement.
Milestone in Sustainable Construction
The opening of the Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wales last October marked a pivotal moment for the industry, as it stands as the UK’s largest ultra-low carbon cement plant capable of producing MevoCem at a commercial scale. This development positions Mevo as a leader in the pursuit of sustainable construction materials.
Dr. Liz Gilligan, CEO and co-founder of Material Evolution, expressed her enthusiasm about the award, stating, “Winning the Constructing Excellence National Innovation Award is a huge milestone for Material Evolution and a real validation of everything our team has worked towards.” She highlighted that this recognition reflects not only the firm’s technological advancements but also the significant transformation occurring within the construction sector.
The CEO added, “What excites me most is that this award shows the industry is ready to embrace ultra-low carbon solutions – it proves that sustainable, scalable, high-performance cement is not just possible, it’s happening today.”
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
Beyond the recent accolade, Mevo has also garnered recognition at various prestigious events, including the UK Green Business Awards and the Unlock Net Zero Awards. Additionally, the company was featured in the Construction Industry Training Board’s list of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards. Recently, Mevo received its Made in Britain certification, further solidifying its commitment to domestic manufacturing.
Material Evolution continues to be at the forefront of sustainable innovation in construction. For more information about their products and initiatives, visit their official website.
