Clintons Reject House Subpoenas in Epstein Investigation

Bill and Hillary Clinton have officially declined to comply with subpoenas issued by the House Oversight Committee concerning the ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. The couple, prominent figures in American politics for over three decades, issued a joint letter this week condemning the inquiry as a tool for “partisan politics.” They assert that the subpoenas are an invalid attempt to damage their legacy.

The situation escalated on January 13, 2026, when former President Bill Clinton did not attend a scheduled closed-door deposition at the Capitol. In response, House Oversight Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, threatened contempt of Congress proceedings against the Clintons. This development follows the Justice Department’s recent release of extensive documents, including photographs that have reignited scrutiny of Clinton’s connections to Epstein.

The House Oversight Committee has been seeking to compel the Clintons to testify about their past interactions with Epstein and his convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Although Bill Clinton has admitted to flying on Epstein’s private jet for foundation-related activities, he has consistently denied any awareness of Epstein’s criminal activities, including sex trafficking. The committee’s resolve intensified after the document release, which reportedly included images of Clinton in relaxed settings with Maxwell.

In their lengthy letter, the Clintons argued that they have already provided all relevant information and accused the committee of unfairly targeting them while allowing other witnesses to evade scrutiny. “Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences,” they declared. “For us, now is that time.”

The Clintons’ legal team, led by attorney David Kendall, claimed that the investigation has been weaponized to protect influential individuals. Kendall noted that out of the nine individuals initially subpoenaed, seven were dismissed without being called to testify. The Clintons highlighted this inconsistency, observing that only two individuals have been interviewed since the investigation commenced last year.

The Clintons emphasized that the actions of the House Oversight Committee lack a credible rationale beyond partisan motivations. As the political landscape in Washington grows more complex, the potential consequences of Comer’s threats loom large. Criminal contempt of Congress is classified as a federal misdemeanor, which can incur fines up to $100,000 and possible imprisonment for up to one year. The Clintons characterized this process as “literally designed to result in our imprisonment.” By refusing to testify, they challenge the oversight authority of a Republican-led Congress during a pivotal election year.

Meanwhile, survivors of Epstein’s abuse await a comprehensive accounting of how he operated within elite circles for so long. Comer and his supporters maintain that obtaining testimony from the Clintons is essential for achieving “truth and justice.” Conversely, the Clintons view the inquiry as a “distraction and obfuscation campaign” aimed at shielding their adversaries.
