In a high-profile arrest this morning, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Milutin Simović, was taken into custody by the Special State Prosecutor’s Office (SDT) for alleged abuse of official position involving €5,000 in representation expenses. The arrest has intensified claims from the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) regarding politically motivated prosecutions against opposition figures.

DPS officials expressed their belief that the arrest marks a continuation of political persecution aimed at undermining their party. They criticized the SDT for focusing on what they described as minor infractions, suggesting that the prosecutor’s office should instead investigate more serious allegations concerning the current government’s handling of state resources and institutions.

The DPS statement emphasized, “If there were previously doubts among the public regarding the accusations of selectivity directed at our party, we believe that after today’s event, no one in Montenegro has any more dilemmas. Instead of addressing significant issues such as arms trafficking and large-scale embezzlement by the current government, the SDT is preoccupied with restaurant bills from seven or eight years ago.”

Critics within the DPS argue that the SDT’s actions are indicative of a broader strategy to discredit their party. They claim that despite numerous evident misdeeds by the current administration, the SDT’s focus remains solely on the DPS. The party’s statement underscored a belief that this reflects a misuse of state apparatus to suppress opposition.

In response to the arrest, the DPS asserted that the SDT has transformed into a tool for political suppression, accusing the prosecutor’s office of leveraging its authority against critics of the government. They stated, “It is clear to the prosecution’s close associates that no one’s actions will go unpunished forever, and there will come a day when they will have to answer for the repression they are executing against critics of this flawed government through the brutal abuse of their official positions.”

The political climate in Montenegro remains tense as the DPS continues to challenge the legitimacy of the SDT’s actions. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the independence of judicial institutions in the country and their implications for political discourse and governance.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact the broader political landscape in Montenegro and the relationship between the government and opposition parties.
