Governor Mutfwang Advocates for State Police Amid Security Concerns

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reiterated his strong support for the establishment of state police to enhance security efforts within his state and across Nigeria. Speaking during a visit from the Nigerian Guild of Editors at the Rayfield Government House in Jos, Mutfwang highlighted the urgent need for local law enforcement to address rising insecurity.

The governor commended President Bola Tinubu for endorsing the push for state police and urged the National Assembly to prioritize this initiative. “When we do have state police, I am sure we will be able to respond better and address many situations faster,” Mutfwang stated, emphasizing the potential for improved public safety through local law enforcement.

In addressing the ongoing security challenges, Mutfwang announced plans to recruit an additional 1,450 personnel for the state’s security outfit, Operation Rainbow, within the next two weeks. “We are not shy of our responsibility to provide security for our citizens,” he reassured, reflecting on the state’s commitment to tackling insecurity head-on.

Strengthening Local Security and Community Trust

Mutfwang’s administration has implemented several measures aimed at restoring peace and safety in the region. He mentioned convening the State Security Council and establishing a modern Security and Information Centre to improve statewide safety. Additionally, he revealed that a fact-finding committee on insecurity has submitted its report, which he intends to forward to the president and relevant security agencies. He assured the public that the report will not be ignored, and actions will be taken based on its findings.

Reflecting on community relations, Mutfwang addressed previous perceptions regarding his administration’s stance on religious issues, asserting that such claims are unfounded. He noted the successful conduct of local government elections in Jos North as a testament to improved community dialogue and cooperation. “For the first time in the history of this state, we conducted the most peaceful local government election in Jos North communities,” he remarked.

Commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party

Governor Mutfwang also dismissed rumors regarding his potential departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He expressed confidence in the party’s future, stating, “The worst fears people had about the PDP is gone.” He conveyed optimism about the party’s direction, suggesting that it is recovering and regaining its footing.

“I will always go where God and the people want me to be,” Mutfwang asserted, emphasizing his commitment to aligning his political path with the wishes of his constituents. He acknowledged the dynamic nature of political seasons and indicated that clarity will emerge over time regarding the party’s trajectory.

During the meeting, NGE President Eze Anaba praised Mutfwang for his proactive peace initiatives and underscored the importance of sharing Plateau’s story through local media. Anaba commended the administration’s efforts to restore calm in previously troubled communities, stating, “Despite all the noise, some harrowing, some discomforting, some distressing, Plateau State is still standing, forging ahead.”

Mutfwang expressed gratitude for the support from the NGE and welcomed the invitation to their upcoming national conference in Abuja. As Plateau State navigates its security challenges, the governor remains steadfast in his commitment to promoting peace, ensuring public safety, and reinforcing the integrity of the PDP.
