Governor Yusuf Champions Cultural Heritage with Durbar Festival

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially directed all Emirs in the state to uphold the annual Durbar festival, a traditional horse riding event, as part of an initiative to preserve the region’s rich cultural heritage. This announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the local Durbar, known as Kanfest (Kalankuwa) 2025, held in Kano on Saturday. Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of investing in arts, culture, and tourism as essential tools for social cohesion, youth engagement, and economic diversification.

The governor’s commitment extends to providing full support from the Kano State Government to the Emirates to ensure the preservation and promotion of this centuries-old tradition of horsemanship. He expressed his administration’s dedication to showcasing this cultural heritage to a global audience.

In his remarks, Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the State Council of Emirates, praised the foresight of the Kano State Government in revitalizing the valuable traditions of the Kano people. He underscored the significance of such events in fostering a sense of community and cultural identity.

According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the three-day event will feature a range of activities, including cultural exhibitions, local cuisine showcases, performances, games, drama, crafts, fabrics, pottery, and presentations from various resource persons.

The Durbar festival is expected to attract a diverse group of participants, including traditional title holders, members of the diplomatic corps, artisans, cultural groups, investors, youth, and artists.
