Italians Rally for Palestine Recognition Amid Government Stance
Public sentiment in Italy has surged against the government’s refusal to recognize Palestine, as nationwide protests erupt in response to Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faces mounting pressure from the public and civil society organizations advocating for the recognition of a Palestinian state. Despite the shift in public opinion, Meloni’s government remains aligned with other nations, such as Germany, in its refusal to formally acknowledge Palestine.
The recent protests culminated in a general strike on Monday, which saw approximately 500,000 people participating across various Italian cities. The USB trade union federation stated that the strike was a direct response to “the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, the blockade of humanitarian aid by the Israeli army, and threats against the international Global Sumud Flotilla mission.” These actions reflect a growing discontent among Italians regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Calls for recognition of Palestine have emerged from a coalition of civil society organizations, grassroots trade unions, and citizens’ associations known as the “pro-Pal Movement.” Their demands extend beyond recognition, urging for an end to military exports to Israel and increased pressure on the Israeli government to cease hostilities.
Recent surveys illustrate a significant shift in public opinion. One poll revealed that 40.6% of Italians support recognizing a fully sovereign Palestinian state, making it the most favored option among respondents. Additionally, a study by the Italian project YouTrend indicated that 60% of Italians believe Israel should withdraw from all occupied territories in the West Bank, while 63% view its actions in Gaza as genocidal.
Lorenzo Pregliasco, a founding partner of YouTrend, noted that the onset of the Gaza conflict has transformed public attitudes. “The extensive media coverage showing the humanitarian issues in the strip has really touched people who did not have a strong opinion on the issue,” he stated. This evolving sentiment has influenced Meloni’s stance, leading to more vocal criticism of the war and its humanitarian consequences.
Traditionally, Italian left-wing parties have been vocal in their opposition to Israel’s actions, yet Pregliasco observes that the gap between government and opposition opinions is narrowing. Still, key differences remain. Meloni has refrained from using the term “genocide” to describe Israeli military actions and has not endorsed Palestinian statehood, positions supported by leftist parties such as the Democratic Party and the Five Stars Movement.
Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, reiterated the government’s position during the UN General Assembly, stating, “A Palestinian State does not exist now, and therefore it cannot be recognized. Before recognizing it, a state should be built up. We cannot make a gift to Hamas.” While Italy endorses a two-state solution, Tajani considers other countries’ recognition of Palestine “not much use” at the moment.
As Meloni navigates this complex issue, she faces a challenging political landscape where her government’s position is increasingly at odds with public sentiment. Lorenzo Pregliasco succinctly summed up the dilemma, stating that for Meloni, the Palestine issue “is like a blanket that’s too short — you can’t cover everything at once.”
The situation remains fluid as political leaders respond to the evolving public sentiment, leaving many to question whether Italy’s official stance on Palestine will change in the near future.
