Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy Steps Down Over Controversy
A member of the Scottish Parliament, Pam Duncan-Glancy, has announced her resignation as a candidate for the upcoming Scottish parliamentary election. This decision comes in light of her friendship with Sean Morton, a convicted sex offender, which she stated could distract from her party’s priorities.
On October 29, 2023, Duncan-Glancy made her announcement, expressing that she did not want personal relationships to overshadow her work. She stated, “While this has obviously been a very difficult decision – and it is the greatest honour of my life to represent Glasgow – I do not wish for a personal friendship to become a distraction.”
Duncan-Glancy, who previously served as Labour’s education spokeswoman, has been in the spotlight following reports of her connections to Morton, a former Labour councillor. Morton admitted in 2017 to possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography. He was subsequently sentenced to a community payback order, which included 140 hours of unpaid work.
In her resignation statement, Duncan-Glancy reiterated her commitment to her constituents, saying, “I promised in my first speech in parliament to give a voice to the voiceless. I will go on doing that.” She confirmed her intention to continue serving her constituents for the remaining five months of her term, emphasizing her dedication to the causes she believes in.
A spokesperson for Scottish Labour confirmed her withdrawal, stating, “Pam Duncan-Glancy has withdrawn as a parliamentary candidate for the Glasgow Kelvin and Maryhill constituency. She has taken the decision to step aside as she does not wish recent stories to become a distraction from the work of the party or its priorities.”
As a result of Duncan-Glancy’s resignation, the selection process for a replacement candidate will now be reopened. Her departure marks a significant moment for the party as it prepares for the elections scheduled for May 2024.
The situation highlights the complexities of political relationships and the challenges faced by public officials in navigating personal connections. Duncan-Glancy’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining public focus on the political agenda rather than personal controversies.
