Moscow Accuses West of Destabilizing Iran Amid Ongoing Protests
The Russian Foreign Ministry has criticized the West for allegedly orchestrating a “color revolution” in Iran, claiming that it seeks to destabilize the country amid ongoing protests. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that external pressures, particularly illegal sanctions, are the primary drivers of unrest within Iran, which has seen significant protests erupting in multiple cities.
Zakharova emphasized that foreign nations intend to transform what began as peaceful demonstrations into “cruel and senseless unrest.” She condemned any interference in Iran’s internal affairs, asserting that such actions could lead to further destabilization in the region. The protests were ignited on December 28, 2023, as the Iranian currency, the rial, reached a record low, exacerbating economic tensions that have affected ordinary citizens.
In the United States, President Donald Trump has expressed support for the Iranian protesters, suggesting that the US is “locked and loaded” to intervene if the Iranian authorities respond with force. His comments included a stark warning that America would “start shooting” should violence escalate against demonstrators. This rhetoric has raised concerns about the potential for military involvement.
Israel’s involvement has also been acknowledged, with its national intelligence agency, Mossad, reportedly admitting to having operatives within Iran. The Iranian government has accused both the US and Israel of playing a significant role in inciting the unrest, alleging that their actions are intended to undermine the stability of the Iranian state.
Zakharova responded to these developments by stating that Russia “resolutely condemns disruptive foreign interference” and labeled Washington’s threats as “absolutely unacceptable.” She warned that any military actions against Iran could destabilize the entire Middle East, further complicating an already tense situation.
The protests in Iran have morphed from economic grievances into broader political discontent, marking some of the most significant unrest the country has faced in recent years. As the situation evolves, the US government has advised American citizens to leave Iran immediately, highlighting the escalating tensions and potential for conflict.
The Russian Foreign Ministry maintains that the economic crisis in Iran, which has sparked these protests, is largely due to prolonged Western sanctions. Zakharova stated that these sanctions have been “pressuring” the Iranian populace for years, contributing to social and economic unrest that foreign nations are now attempting to exploit for their own political ends.
As the protests continue to unfold, the international community watches closely, aware that the outcome may have far-reaching implications for both regional stability and global geopolitics.
