Museveni Claims Opposition as ‘Terrorists’ After Election Victory
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni declared victory in the recent election, winning a seventh term with a commanding 72% of the vote. In his victory speech on March 10, 2024, Museveni labeled the opposition as “terrorists” who attempted to use violence to undermine the electoral process. His comments came amidst widespread criticism of the election from both local and international observers, who cited serious concerns about the repression of opposition voices and a government-imposed internet blackout during the voting period.
The official results indicated that opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, garnered 25% of the votes. However, his current whereabouts remain unclear. Following a police raid on his home on March 9, Wine reported that he was in hiding. While police denied the raid occurred, they restricted media access to his residence. Wine has not made any public statements since claiming that the election was marred by “blatant theft.”
In his address, Museveni accused Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), of plotting violence against polling stations in regions where they were losing. He stated, “Some of the opposition are wrong and also terrorists,” further alleging that they were collaborating with foreign entities and “homosexual groups.” Museveni’s remarks reflect a longstanding narrative that seeks to delegitimize the opposition while consolidating his authority, which has persisted since he assumed power in 1986.
Government Crackdown and Election Concerns
The lead-up to the election was marked by a government-imposed internet shutdown, which officials justified as necessary to prevent misinformation and violence. Although some internet services were restored shortly after the election, social media platforms remain blocked indefinitely. Reports from the African Union and Human Rights Watch highlighted significant intimidation tactics, including arrests and abductions, that created an atmosphere of fear among voters.
Despite claims of a peaceful post-election environment, sporadic protests erupted in the capital, Kampala, where security forces reportedly used teargas against demonstrators. Museveni’s administration has maintained a visible security presence, a precautionary measure likely influenced by violent incidents in neighboring countries during recent elections.
The most severe allegations of violence surfaced in the Butambala region, where an opposition member of parliament claimed that security forces killed at least ten individuals during the election. Museveni defended the actions of law enforcement, asserting that the fatalities resulted from a premeditated attack on a ballot-tallying center and police station.
International Reactions and Future Implications
Analysts view this election as a formality, given Museveni’s extensive control over the state and the security apparatus. Many Ugandans recognize his role in maintaining relative stability and economic progress over the decades. Nevertheless, the opposition’s suppression raises questions about the integrity of Uganda’s democratic processes.
As the situation continues to develop, the international community remains watchful. Observers from the African Union expressed concerns that the intimidation and repression observed during the election have eroded public trust in Uganda’s electoral system. The unfolding events will likely shape the political landscape and influence future opposition strategies as Uganda navigates its complex political terrain.
