Nationwide Protests Erupt Following Shooting of Activist Renee Good
Demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intensified over the weekend following the fatal shooting of activist Renee Nicole Good by a federal immigration officer in Minnesota. Protests erupted in major cities across the United States, including Austin, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, with participants expressing outrage and demanding accountability.
In Austin, a significant crowd gathered near the J.J. Pickle Federal Building, where tensions escalated into confrontations with law enforcement. Police confirmed that at least five individuals were arrested as officers intervened to disperse the protestors blocking traffic at the intersection of South Congress and East Sixth Street. Video footage captured the chaotic scenes as police pushed into the crowd, with demonstrators chanting in solidarity with those detained.
Governor Greg Abbott of Texas condemned the protests, stating that the Texas Department of Public Safety would not tolerate what he described as “defiant protesters.” Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesperson for the agency, reiterated the state’s commitment to maintaining public safety, declaring that “violence, threats to the public or law enforcement, obstruction of roadways, and damage to property will not be tolerated.”
The protests were sparked by the killing of Good, a 37-year-old mother who was shot during a confrontation with ICE agents in Minneapolis on January 10, 2026. Witnesses and activists who attended the demonstrations have labeled her death a “murder,” vehemently disputing the federal narrative that claimed the officer acted in self-defense. As protests spread under the banner “ICE Out for Good,” local officials and community members called for an end to ICE operations, viewing them as a threat to public safety.
As events unfolded in Austin, similar protests took shape in Los Angeles, where hundreds of demonstrators marched through downtown streets. The Los Angeles Police Department issued dispersal orders after the gathering escalated, citing public safety concerns. Police reported that several arrests occurred when protestors refused to leave the area after being ordered to disperse.
Demonstrations also occurred in other major cities, including Portland, Oregon, and New York City, with organizers planning over 1,000 protests nationwide. Activists utilized the slogan “ICE Out for Good” to highlight their demands and to honor Good’s memory.
In Minneapolis, thousands marched from Powderhorn Park to Lake Street, chanting Good’s name as they traversed immigrant neighborhoods. Officials noted that while most protests remained peaceful, 29 individuals were arrested on the previous Friday night for vandalism. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the need for calm, stating, “We will not counter chaos with our own brand of chaos.”
The protests have sparked a national dialogue about immigration enforcement and police accountability. Community members have expressed deep concern over the implications of Good’s death. For instance, local teacher Joanna Ford remarked on the impact of the tragedy on her students, some of whom are immigrants themselves. “It’s just really disheartening,” she stated, emphasizing the need for change.
Protesters in both Austin and Los Angeles displayed signs and slogans demanding justice for Good and an end to federal immigration enforcement. Many waved upside-down American flags, a traditional signal of distress, to convey their discontent with government actions.
As authorities prepare for further demonstrations, the situation remains tense, with activists determined to continue their fight against ICE and advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. The shooting of Renee Good has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policy in the United States, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and action in response to community concerns.
