Police Action Against Politicians Sparks Outcry in Montenegro
The police in Montenegro have taken legal action against several members of the opposition, including Oskar Huter, a representative of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), and Aida Petrović, a member of the Council for Civilian Oversight of Police Work. This move, which follows a protest outside the official residence of the Prime Minister during the controversial awarding of the July 13 Award, has raised concerns regarding the government’s treatment of political dissent.
According to statements from the DPS, the police’s actions signify a continuation of the government’s campaign against its critics. The party expressed its view that this situation highlights a concerning trend wherein law enforcement is being utilized as a tool for political repression. They claim that the police have transformed into “the whip of this government” in efforts to silence opposition voices.
The protest on the day of the award ceremony was marked by significant public dissatisfaction. DPS officials criticized the awarding of the prestigious accolade to individuals they described as “worshippers of fascism, nationalists, and chauvinists.” They argued that giving the July 13 Award, named after a pivotal anti-fascist date in Europe, to such individuals is an affront to the values of a free and democratic Montenegro.
In their statement, DPS emphasized the importance of freedom of expression, claiming that Huter and other protesters were exercising their rights when they expressed their discontent. They accused the government of attempting to stifle dissent through intimidation and legal action, stating, “You may abuse all powers, including judicial, police, and media, but you cannot intimidate DPS representatives.”
The ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition reflect a broader struggle over political freedoms in Montenegro. Critics of the current administration assert that the authorities are increasingly resorting to punitive measures against those who challenge their actions. The police’s involvement in these legal proceedings continues to fuel allegations of politicization within law enforcement.
As the situation develops, the DPS has vowed to continue its fight for a democratic and civic-oriented Montenegro, emphasizing that their commitment to anti-fascist and European values will not be deterred by intimidation tactics. The party’s stance underscores the importance of maintaining political discourse and democratic principles in the face of increasing repression.
