Reform UK Celebrates Council By-Election Wins Across Regions

Reform UK achieved significant victories in three council by-elections held on March 14, 2024, demonstrating a remarkable shift in support. The party, led by Nigel Farage, overturned substantial majorities in Cannock Chase, Durham, and Llanelli, marking a crucial moment in its political trajectory.
In the Easington & Shotton ward of Durham, Reform UK managed to retain its seat with a 26.5-point lead over the second-place Labour Party, despite a slight drop of 3.5 points in its vote share. This win signifies the first time Reform UK has successfully defended a seat it already holds, following a series of challenges in earlier by-elections throughout the region.
Cannock Chase witnessed a notable victory as well, with Reform UK capturing the Hednesford Green Heath ward. The party achieved a remarkable 25.2% swing from Labour, increasing its vote share by an impressive 31.8 points to secure 51.5% of the total votes. In contrast, Labour experienced a significant decline, dropping 18.6 points to garner just 22.6% of the vote.
In Carmarthenshire, Reform UK added to its momentum by winning a second councillor seat from Labour. Candidate Carmelo Colasanto received 43% of the votes, surpassing Plaid Cymru at 30% and Labour at 23.6%. Following this win, Cllr David Thomas expressed confidence in the party’s future, stating, “The victory in Carmarthenshire is proof that people are ready for real change, and that Labour’s grip is slipping.” He added, “Well done Carmelo, the team, and every single volunteer who made this possible. The tide is turning — and this is just the beginning. Reform is rising across Wales.”
Reform UK is now focusing its efforts on Wales in anticipation of the upcoming Senedd elections scheduled for May 2025. The party aims to build on its recent successes and capture additional seats, reflecting a growing desire for change among voters.
These results highlight a shifting political landscape in the UK, with Reform UK gaining traction in regions where it previously struggled. The party’s ability to secure these victories could signal a broader trend of changing political allegiances as the nation approaches critical elections.
