Remote Tan Hill Inn Faces Unique Challenges to Stay Afloat
The Tan Hill Inn, situated at an elevation of 1,732 feet in the Yorkshire Dales, faces significant operational challenges as the highest pub in Britain. Its owner, Andrew Hields, revealed that it costs approximately £100,000 annually just to maintain basic services, including electricity generated by a generator, as the establishment is completely off-grid. Located in Richmond, the nearest town, Kirkby Stephen, is 11 miles away and can only be reached via narrow, winding roads across the moors.
The pub, a historic establishment dating back to the 17th century, gained attention in winter 2021 when heavy snowfall trapped around 60 patrons inside for several days. Hields has owned the inn since June 2018, viewing it as an opportunity to utilize his diverse business background, which includes experience in renewable energy and marketing. He also manages the Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw, known for being close to Britain’s highest waterfall.
Hields explained the complexities of operating such a remote establishment. “This place pulled on all of my past experiences and skill sets,” he noted, emphasizing the logistical hurdles, especially concerning staffing. “It’s £100,000 a year now to keep the lights on. That would cripple most other pubs, but luckily a thousand people a week are coming through the doors, which helps.”
Staffing Solutions and Community Atmosphere
The Tan Hill Inn has adapted its staffing arrangements to meet the challenges of its isolated location. The pub features six staff bedrooms and 11 guest rooms, with most employees staying for three to four nights a week. For those who do not drive, carpooling arrangements are in place, and plans for a bus service to assist team members are underway. Hields has found the part-time live-in arrangement to be more sustainable, balancing the intensity and busyness of the environment.
El Applegarth, the pub’s manageress, expressed the familial atmosphere among staff. “We’re like a family. It’s a bit like a uni house, sometimes,” she said, noting the close-knit relationships that develop in such a unique setting. Applegarth, who commutes from Newcastle, has even involved her family in pub activities, with her father, John, dressing up as Santa Claus for the upcoming holiday season.
The camaraderie among staff contributes to a vibrant environment. Applegarth described the pub as “magical,” where patrons engage with one another in meaningful conversations. “It’s a bit like going back in time. People actually talk to each other as they know they’re going to be stuck together,” she added.
Business Insights and Future Challenges
Running a remote pub poses distinct challenges, according to Hields. He emphasized the importance of effective marketing, particularly since the Tan Hill Inn is not situated near any major tourist attractions. “You have to treat the customer and the staff well and never take advantage of a customer,” he advised. “Try and give the best experience that represents your kind of offering.”
Each pub has its own unique character, often shaped by its owners. Hields aims to amplify what the Tan Hill Inn represents, whether through the weather, the atmosphere, or the overall experience. He described the role as a “labour of love,” acknowledging the demanding nature of the hospitality industry, especially in today’s climate.
As the Tan Hill Inn continues to attract visitors and maintain its operations, the dedication of Hields and his team remains central to its success. With a commitment to creating a welcoming environment despite logistical challenges, the inn stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit in one of Britain’s most picturesque yet remote locations.
