Viewers Cancel Sky Subscriptions Following Gary Neville’s Controversial Remarks
Anger among British viewers has led to a wave of subscription cancellations from Sky Sports after former England footballer Gary Neville made provocative remarks about “middle-aged white men.” These comments followed the tragic terror attack at a Manchester synagogue on March 3, 2024, where two individuals lost their lives. Many subscribers are now calling for Neville’s removal from the channel, expressing their frustration on social media.
In a video posted online, Neville criticized societal divisions and specifically cited the behavior of certain demographics in the wake of the attack. He reflected on his observations while driving through Manchester, noting the presence of numerous Union Jack flags. He stated, “I just kept thinking as I was driving home last night that we’re all being turned on each other, and the division that’s being created is absolutely disgusting. Mainly created by angry middle-aged white men who know exactly what they’re doing.”
His comments have sparked a significant backlash. Many social media users have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their dissatisfaction. One user wrote, “Will be cancelling my Sky Sports subscription whilst lovie leftie, unpatriotic, terrorist supporting, Gary Neville is employed by the channel.” Another user added, “Angry white men, millions of us who pay subscriptions, have had enough of this P***, get him gone!”
Neville’s remarks have reverberated beyond the realm of sports. He described the display of national flags as being used “in a negative fashion,” suggesting that the recent ‘Raise the Colours’ movement was indicative of broader societal issues.
The response from the public has been swift, with some viewers stating they would cancel their subscriptions in protest. One comment from a self-identified middle-aged veteran noted, “As a middle-aged, white veteran male, I am and will continue putting up my flag… sadly also as a Manchester United and Gary Neville fan I will also boycott everything to do with him if this is his views.”
Critics argue that Neville’s statements reflect a detachment from the sentiments of working-class individuals. One user remarked, “Gary Neville is just another out-of-touch Labour-supporting celebrity, many such examples – but this time he’s gone too far by blaming the white working class for a Jihadi Islamist terrorist attack on Jews.”
As the situation continues to unfold, the Daily Express has reached out to Sky Sports for a statement regarding the controversy and the potential impact on viewer subscriptions.
This incident highlights the increasingly polarized nature of public discourse surrounding sensitive issues, especially in the realm of sports and media. As viewers express their outrage, it remains to be seen how Sky Sports will navigate the fallout from Neville’s comments.
