Živković Reflects on DPS’s Legacy and Challenges as Opposition
The leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) in Montenegro, Danijel Živković, discussed the historical successes of his party during its 30 years in power and the challenges it faces now as an opposition force. In an interview on the program “Argumenti” broadcast on TVCG, Živković noted that while the party enjoyed various privileges during its rule, recent political shifts have made its current status much more demanding.
Živković emphasized that the DPS maintained its position as the strongest political party in Montenegro despite transitioning to opposition following the electoral changes of August 30, 2020. He acknowledged that this shift has brought about significant challenges in a changing political and social environment, particularly regarding the party’s reputation and public support.
“There were many officials and leaders within the party who contributed to our numerous victories,” Živković stated. He highlighted the importance of resilience and tolerance during this period of opposition, suggesting that not all party members can cope with the pressure of political defeat.
The departure of Nikola Janović, a former minister and member of the DPS presidency, has stirred discussions about the party’s future. Živković reflected on Janović’s contributions to the party, particularly his influence as a former sports captain, and expressed regret over his decision to leave. Nevertheless, he maintained that Janović’s departure will not adversely affect the DPS’s overall support, referencing past departures that have not significantly harmed its standing in previous elections.
Živković pointed to the fact that Janović served as a minister from 2016 to 2020 and was instrumental in the party’s activities during that time. He acknowledged that while it would have been preferable for Janović to remain with the DPS, the choice ultimately lay with him, and the two parted ways amicably.
In discussing the allegations of internal autocracy, Živković asserted that anyone questioning his leadership or decision-making should feel free to voice their concerns openly, either publicly or within party structures. He noted that such claims had not been raised during his tenure as party leader.
Reflecting on the broader context, Živković indicated that the DPS has faced scrutiny from various institutions, including security sectors and the judiciary, which he believes are attempts to undermine the party’s credibility. He emphasized that the DPS remains a relevant political entity, citing ongoing media attention as evidence of its significance in the political landscape.
As the DPS navigates its opposition role, Živković highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue and adaptation within the party. He mentioned that the party’s internal discussions focus on strategic planning, ensuring that it remains responsive to the evolving needs of its constituents.
The leader also addressed the party’s image, countering narratives suggesting that the DPS is out of touch with the public. He pointed out that the party’s support has seen an increase of over 7% over the past two years, despite ongoing attempts at discrediting it.
In conclusion, Živković underscored that the DPS is committed to reform and growth, stating, “The measure of reform is determined by the citizens.” His remarks reflect a determination to maintain the party’s relevance and strengthen its position within Montenegro’s political landscape, even in the face of adversity.
