Disney Destiny Cruise Ship Launches with Spectacular Projection Mapping
The launch of the Disney Destiny cruise ship took place at Port Everglades, Florida, featuring an impressive projection mapping display that marked a significant milestone in the maritime entertainment industry. This event is believed to be the largest projection mapping on a moving and floating object to date, showcasing advanced technology and creative artistry.
To achieve this groundbreaking projection mapping, the team employed a sophisticated setup that included 30 laser projectors and four media servers, delivering a remarkable resolution of over 6,840 x 1,200 pixels. The project required live tracking of the ship’s position, supported by 15 infrared cameras, 38 infrared emitters, and more than one mile of fibre-optic and networking cabling. The VYV Corporation, known for its innovative Photon media server, played a crucial role in facilitating this complex project.
Aaron Counterman, a video systems design manager at Disney Live Entertainment, shared insights about the project on LinkedIn, stating: “Projector calibration, alignment and content adjustments were completed with an extremely tight time frame and wouldn’t have been possible without the great minds from the VYV Corporation. There were so many talented people involved in this achievement.”
While this is not the first instance of projection mapping on a cruise ship, it sets itself apart due to the ship’s movement during the performance. Previous notable events include the naming ceremony of the MSC World Europa in Doha in 2022, which featured projection mapping on a moored ship, and the Aurora battleship in St Petersburg, Russia, in 2017. More recently, the Minghua cruise ship was projection mapped in 2023 at Sea World Shekou in Shenzhen, China. Unlike these earlier examples, the Disney Destiny was in motion during its launch, enhancing the complexity and visual impact of the projections.
The launch ceremony on November 6, 2023, was themed around heroes and villains, bringing to life beloved scenes from classic Disney films such as Hercules, The Lion King, Frozen, Black Panther, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The event not only featured stunning visual displays but also included a captivating drone show and live music, creating a festive atmosphere for attendees.
The Disney Destiny is the third ship in Disney Cruise Line’s Wish-class fleet, following the Disney Wish, launched in 2022, and the upcoming Disney Treasure, set for 2024. Weighing in at 144,000 tons and constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, the ship represents an investment of approximately $900 million. It features 1,254 cabins designed to accommodate up to 4,000 guests.
The Disney Destiny is set to embark on its maiden voyage on November 20, 2023. The ship will offer four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean, departing from Fort Lauderdale. This innovative launch not only showcases Disney’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of entertainment but also highlights advancements in technology that enhance guest experiences on the high seas.
