Lego Unveils Groundbreaking SMART Brick at CES 2024
Lego has announced a revolutionary advancement in play technology with the unveiling of the SMART Brick at the CES 2024 show in Las Vegas on January 5. This innovative piece is designed to enhance the interactivity of Lego sets by integrating both physical and digital play experiences.
The SMART Brick, developed by the Lego Group’s Creative Play Lab team, incorporates a compact PC-style processor within its plastic casing. When paired with the new SMART Tag and SMART Minifigure, the brick can add dynamic features such as speakers and lights to various builds. This technology introduces built-in sensors that allow the bricks to react to user actions with corresponding sounds and behaviours, creating a more immersive play experience.
Significantly, the SMART Brick operates independently, eliminating the need for a smartphone or tablet connection. Although it does not require conventional batteries, it will need to be charged periodically, ensuring that playtime remains uninterrupted.
The first Lego sets to incorporate the “SMART play” platform will be part of the highly anticipated Lego Star Wars series, set to launch on March 1, 2026. These new sets will be priced starting at under £60, making them accessible to a broad audience of Lego enthusiasts.
This innovative leap in play technology not only exemplifies Lego’s commitment to evolving play experiences but also positions the brand at the forefront of the toy industry’s digital transformation. With the integration of the SMART Brick, Lego aims to create a unique blend of creativity and technology that will captivate both young builders and adult collectors alike.
As the launch date approaches, anticipation builds around how the SMART Brick will redefine play and storytelling in the Lego universe.
