Research Identifies Reading as the UK’s Premier Town for Living and Working
A recent study by Colony has identified Reading in the south east of England as the best place to live and work in the United Kingdom. The research evaluated various factors that contribute to quality of life and career opportunities, ranking the top five areas across the country.
Reading achieved the highest employment rate in the UK at 86.1%, surpassing the national average of 75.3%. Additionally, the town boasts a median income of £45,618, significantly higher than the UK average of £37,430. The town’s GDP per capita stands at £65,090, reflecting a robust economic growth of 23.6% since 2019, largely driven by its finance and technology sectors.
Strong Productivity and Skilled Workforce
Reading’s productivity is impressive, with workers generating an average of £49 per hour in value. The workforce is also highly skilled, with 76.3% of individuals achieving Level 3 qualifications or above, compared to the national figure of 67.9%. Residents benefit from one of the UK’s shortest commutes, averaging just 8.5 minutes, significantly less than the national average of 29 minutes. Life satisfaction in the town is rated at 7.43 out of 10, closely aligning with the UK average of 7.45.
Despite higher housing costs, with average prices around £340,000 and monthly rents averaging £1,026, these figures reflect the area’s desirability. The national average for house prices is £269,000, while the average rent stands at £1,365. The town’s appeal lies in its prime location, nestled between the scenic North Wessex Downs Nature Reserve and London.
Quality of Life and Community Amenities
Reading is recognized for its lower levels of mental health strain compared to other regions, offering residents a blend of high salaries, ample career opportunities, and strong lifestyle factors. The town features over 100 parks and playgrounds, including five miles of picturesque riverside paths. Central to the community is Forbury Gardens, a public park situated on the historic grounds of Reading Abbey. The largest park, Prospect Park, was established in 1901 and was once owned by Frances Kendrick.
In addition to Reading, other towns making the top five list include Wokingham, Swindon, and Warrington. Wokingham boasts the highest disposable household income at £28,641. Swindon features a median salary of £39,252, while Warrington has a median income of £22,152.
The findings from Colony underscore Reading’s position as a leading destination for professionals seeking both career advancement and quality living conditions, highlighting its vibrant community and economic potential.
