Scientists Suggest Extraterrestrials May Disguise as AI
Recent discussions among scientists have raised intriguing theories regarding the possibility of extraterrestrial life potentially disguising itself as artificial intelligence. As technology continues to evolve, experts emphasize the need to consider alternative explanations for the existence of alien civilizations.
Dr. Robin Corbet, a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, articulates that the Milky Way galaxy likely contains a significant number of extraterrestrial civilizations, or ETCs. He notes that, contrary to popular belief, these civilizations might not possess the technological capabilities required for large-scale astro-engineering projects. Instead, they may lack the motivation to engage in extensive communication with other life forms.
Dr. Corbet elaborates on the challenges facing ETCs, stating that while they may attempt to send out high-power signals or probes to make contact, such efforts could span billions of years before yielding a response. Consequently, the incentive for these civilizations to communicate diminishes. He remarked that Earth might not be viewed as a particularly appealing destination for these extraterrestrial beings.
In his recent paper, titled “A Less Terrifying Universe? Mundanity as an Explanation for the Fermi Paradox,” Dr. Corbet introduces the concept of “radical mundanity.” He argues that this notion significantly reduces the likelihood of an alien invasion. He asserts, “This consideration also leads to the expectation that no ETC will colonise a large fraction of the Galaxy, even using robotic probes, and that there are no long duration high-power beacons.”
Understanding the Fermi Paradox
The Fermi Paradox, which questions why we have not yet detected evidence of extraterrestrial life given the vastness of the universe, has inspired various theories over time. Some suggest humanity may be confined within a “celestial zoo,” while others propose that aliens could be shapeshifting into forms that remain unrecognizable to us. Based on the Drake Equation, there should be numerous extraterrestrial civilizations capable of communication nearby, suggesting a high probability of contact.
In a separate yet related development, astronomers have been tracking an interstellar object known as 3I/ATLAS. Set to make its closest approach to the Sun on October 29, 2023, this object has sparked speculation regarding its origins. Some have theorized that it could be a spaceship or an “alien mothership,” but these claims have been debunked.
3I/ATLAS is characterized as a hyperbolic interstellar object, meaning it originated from outside our solar system and is merely passing through. Discovered through the ATLAS survey, it is the third confirmed interstellar object following ‘Oumuamua’ in 2017 and ‘Borisov’ in 2019. Described as a small icy or rocky body, 3I/ATLAS bears similarities to a comet but shows no signs of propulsion or artificial structures.
NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies has confirmed that 3I/ATLAS will not collide with Earth, and the likelihood of it impacting any planetary body is extremely low. The date of October 29 refers to its closest approach to the Sun, rather than a potential Earth impact. Astronomers have indicated that the object will not be visible to the naked eye without the aid of a powerful telescope.
As discussions around extraterrestrial life continue, scientists like Dr. Corbet urge caution in interpreting these phenomena, reminding us that the universe may not be as populated as some theories suggest. The exploration of these ideas opens a pathway for further investigation into the nature of life beyond our planet.
