Aberdeen Chief Executive Aims for Consistent Success with Thelin

Aberdeen FC’s chief executive, Alan Burrows, has outlined a vision for “consistency of success” as he reflects on the impactful tenure of manager Jimmy Thelin. Thelin, who took the helm of the club after joining from Elfsborg in 2024, has already made significant strides, culminating in a triumphant Scottish Cup victory in May. This marked Aberdeen’s first cup win since 1990, achieved through a penalty shootout against Celtic.

Under Thelin’s leadership, Aberdeen finished fifth in the William Hill Premiership, demonstrating resilience after a challenging start to the current season. The team now occupies sixth place in the league and is positioned 33rd in the Conference League table, preparing for a crucial home match against Strasbourg on Thursday.

Burrows, speaking after the club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday, emphasized the importance of Thelin’s achievements in his inaugural season. “In Jimmy’s first season, he achieved two things: we won the Scottish Cup and we achieved European group-stage football,” he stated. This success sets a benchmark for Aberdeen, with Burrows insisting that the club must strive to maintain high standards.

The focus, according to Burrows, is not just on one-off successes but on building a foundation for continuous achievement. “This is a football club that has to hold itself to a standard whereby we want to win trophies, we want to compete at the top end of the table,” Burrows explained. He highlighted the club’s ambition to regularly participate in European competitions, a goal that has already been realized in Thelin’s first year.

The chief executive underscored the necessity for stability and consistency within the club, stating, “The drive is consistency, and that’s the part that we’re really striving to achieve, is consistent success on the field rather than sort of a peaks and troughs element.” Recognizing the nature of football, Burrows acknowledged that very few clubs enjoy uninterrupted success. Resilience in the face of challenges remains critical for growth.

To foster this environment, Burrows pointed to several key areas of focus. He mentioned the importance of consistent recruitment and coaching, as well as the need for a strong academy system to nurture young talent. “We are seeing some elements to it and also continuing to drive hard the academy to try and produce as many good young players and create that proper pathway for them to come into the first team,” he noted. Burrows believes that early signs of this strategy are beginning to emerge, with promising young players starting to make their mark.
