Award-Winning Mosque Project Blends Modern Architecture with History
The Hadrovića Mosque in Podgorica has been recognized with the prestigious Ranko Radović Award for 2025, not merely for its architectural design but for its deeper significance in addressing historical injustices. Positioned at a crucial intersection in the Drac neighborhood, this new sacred space seeks to reinterpret the memory of a mosque that existed until the mid-20th century rather than attempting to reconstruct it. The award jury praised the project for its sensitivity to the historical context and the modern needs of the community, recognizing the architectural firm ARHING Engineering, led by architect Rifat Alihodžić.
In an interview with Pobjeda, Alihodžić elaborated on the project’s aims to balance contemporary expression with a responsibility towards the site’s historical memory. He emphasized that the mosque’s design is a thoughtful response to the systematic erasure of its predecessor, showcasing architecture that embodies both strength and modest symbolism.
The location of the Hadrovića Mosque, previously marked by a demolished Ottoman-era structure, is described by Alihodžić as the “navel” of the neighborhood—a geographical center where community members frequently gather. The new design emphasizes human scale, ensuring that the minaret does not exceed the height of nearby buildings. This approach aims to create a space that not only serves religious purposes but also enhances the urban fabric of Drac.
Alihodžić stated, “The project was designed with an awareness of its urban potential. It serves as a significant landmark, especially at night with carefully crafted lighting effects.” He noted that while traditional Islamic architecture often imposes constraints, the design of the Hadrovića Mosque allows for a contemporary expression that resonates with local context and aesthetics.
The mosque’s construction reflects the duality of modern architectural language and strong ties to its historical site, which Alihodžić believes is crucial for contemporary architecture in Montenegro. He articulated that, despite the lack of formal guidelines in Islam regarding mosque construction, the design is rooted in local typologies and materials, particularly stone, which plays a dominant role in the building’s facade.
Alihodžić highlighted the importance of public spaces in fostering social interaction, stating that well-designed squares and parks act as platforms for democratic idea exchange, while poorly planned environments can lead to exclusion and fragmentation. In the context of ongoing challenges in Montenegro, he expressed concern over rampant developments driven by investor interests, often at the expense of community needs and urban integrity.
As a response to the systematic destruction of sacred sites during the socialist era, Alihodžić sees the Hadrovića Mosque as not only a physical structure but a message to future generations of architects. He believes that architecture should reflect responsibility towards the environment and the community, reminding us that even the smallest building can contribute meaningfully to the urban landscape.
He warned against the dangers of viewing space solely as a commodity, reiterating, “Our profession cannot be absolved. We have often become complicit for a ‘handful of dollars.’” Alihodžić’s commitment to resisting such compromises is evident; he has refrained from designing for commercial interests for over two decades, advocating instead for a return to professional ethics in urban planning.
The Hadrovića Mosque stands as a testament to the potential of contemporary architecture to honor historical narratives while addressing modern needs. Alihodžić’s work exemplifies how architecture can actively engage in social dialogue, offering a pathway for cultural coexistence in a diverse society. As Montenegro grapples with its urban challenges, the mosque serves as an inspiring model for integrating heritage with contemporary expression.
