Bangladesh Requests Relocation of T20 World Cup Matches from India

Bangladesh has officially requested that its matches in the upcoming T20 World Cup be relocated to Sri Lanka. This decision follows the release of Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Kolkata Knight Riders, after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advised the team to part ways with him. The T20 World Cup is set to commence on February 7, 2024, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

In a statement reported by the state-run BSS news agency, Asif Nazrul, the Youth and Sports Adviser in Bangladesh’s interim government, emphasized that the nation would not tolerate any perceived disrespect towards its cricketers or the sport itself. “We will not accept any insult to Bangladeshi cricket, cricketers and Bangladesh under any circumstances,” he declared. He added, “The days of slavery are over,” reflecting the heightened tensions between the two countries.

The BCCI’s intervention came after rising political tensions between India and Bangladesh, following a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 that resulted in the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was seen as a key ally of New Delhi. In light of these developments, Nazrul has instructed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to communicate with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the situation. He noted that if a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer cannot participate in India, then the entire team would feel unsafe competing there.

In response to this situation, Nazrul has demanded that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka instead. The BCB is expected to convene an emergency meeting to discuss these issues further. “The dignity and security of our cricketers are our top priorities, and we will take a decision at the appropriate time keeping these in mind,” said Aminul Islam Bulbul, BCB president.

Mustafizur, who had been auctioned in December for over $1 million, has previously played in the IPL for various teams. His release has raised concerns about the safety and treatment of Bangladeshi players in India. The BCCI’s secretary, Devajit Saikia, confirmed that Kolkata Knight Riders had been “advised to release” the 30-year-old pacer “considering recent developments.”

In a further move to address the situation, Nazrul has called for a ban on IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh. “I have requested the Information and Broadcasting Adviser to stop the broadcasting of the IPL tournament in Bangladesh,” he stated, indicating a strong stance against the treatment of Bangladeshi players.

As the T20 World Cup approaches, the implications of these political and sporting tensions remain significant, with both teams and fans closely monitoring developments.
