Barcelona Targets Pau Torres to Strengthen Defence for Next Season
Barcelona is actively pursuing a new defender, with a focus on signing Pau Torres from Aston Villa. The club recognizes the importance of securing a left-sided centre-back ahead of the upcoming season, according to multiple sources speaking to ESPN. Following the departure of a key player earlier this year, coach Hansi Flick has faced challenges in establishing a reliable defensive lineup.
Currently, Barcelona’s defensive options include Ronald Araújo, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen. However, Flick has struggled to find a consistent pairing this season. In recent matches, with Araújo taking a mental health break and García deployed in midfield, Flick has even experimented with left-back Alejandro Balde as a centre-back. The rationale behind this decision is Balde’s left-footedness, which benefits the team’s possession play when building from the back.
Given these circumstances, Barcelona is keen on adding Torres, a player who has long been on their radar. The Spanish international’s skills in both aerial duels and ball distribution make him an appealing candidate. Previously, Barcelona considered acquiring Torres when he was at Villarreal, but he ultimately joined Aston Villa in 2023 for approximately €40 million ($47 million).
While Barcelona is aware that negotiating with Villa may be challenging—given Torres’s importance to manager Unai Emery’s squad—sources indicate that the defender would be open to a return to Spain if Barcelona makes a serious offer. Currently, Torres’s contract with Villa extends until 2028, making any potential transfer a complex matter.
Exploring Additional Options for Barcelona’s Defence
Barcelona is not solely focused on Torres. The club is also considering Nico Schlotterbeck, a defender whose performances have garnered positive attention since his breakthrough at Freiburg. Schlotterbeck, currently at Borussia Dortmund, has a contract that runs until 2027. However, if he does not renew, he could leave for a reduced fee next summer, an option that would be attractive to Barcelona, especially with several other European clubs monitoring his situation.
Financial considerations play a significant role in Barcelona’s plans. The club aims to comply with LaLiga’s financial fair play regulations, and any signings will depend on their financial health. As part of this strategy, Barcelona could create additional budgetary space for signings by offloading high-earning players like Christensen and Robert Lewandowski, both of whom are out of contract at the end of the current season.
While no final decisions have been made regarding the futures of Christensen or Lewandowski beyond this season, a departure of the Danish defender would intensify Barcelona’s need for a new centre-back. As the club navigates these complexities, the focus remains on strengthening the squad for the challenges ahead.
