A new initiative aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Bosniak community was launched today at the Center for Culture in Bijelo Polje, Montenegro. The project, titled “Bosnjacka Sehara,” focuses on safeguarding traditional artifacts, values, and everyday customs that shape the community’s identity.

During a well-attended event, project coordinator Aiša Mujanović highlighted the urgent need to protect these cultural elements, particularly in rural areas where authentic items and lifestyles are increasingly overshadowed by modern living. The initiative seeks to ensure that the values of the past are preserved and passed on to future generations in engaging and visually appealing forms.

Documenting Cultural Heritage

As part of the “Bosnjacka Sehara” project, an album featuring Bosniak culture will be created, showcasing photographs and descriptions of traditional items, clothing, tools, and crafts that were integral to the daily lives of Bosniak families. Mujanović emphasized that this album aims not only to document material traces of culture but also to instill a sense of belonging and pride among younger generations.

In addition to Mujanović, the project’s significance was underscored by Edin Smailović, the director of the Center for Culture, and Kemal Musić, director of the Public Institution “Ratković Evening of Poetry.” Both underscored the cultural importance of the project and its potential to foster community engagement.

Support and Definition of Sehara

The “Bosnjacka Sehara” project has received support from the Council for the Protection and Realization of Minority Rights in Montenegro for the year 2025.

The term “sehara” refers to a wooden chest or box in which precious items, money, jewelry, and a girl’s dowry were traditionally stored. Often adorned with ornaments and secured with a lock and key, the sehara held significant importance in households, typically positioned to catch the sunlight.

The project aims to revive interest in these historical artifacts and cultural practices, ensuring that they remain a vital part of the community’s identity. Through initiatives like this, the Bosniak community in Bijelo Polje is taking proactive steps to combat cultural loss and promote awareness of its rich heritage.
