Carlos Mendes Gomes Shines After Injury Comeback at Exeter City
Carlos Mendes Gomes has made a notable return to football with Exeter City after a challenging period sidelined by injury. The 27-year-old forward joined the club on a season-long loan from Bolton Wanderers on the transfer deadline day in early September. Following a promising start, where he made his debut as a substitute against Rotherham United, Mendes Gomes faced a significant setback.
In training just a week later, he sustained an abductor muscle injury that required surgery. Initially projected to keep him off the pitch for three months, his recovery extended to over four months, leading to a feeling of being a “forgotten man” within the team. However, he made his long-awaited return in December 2023, contributing positively despite not yet starting a match for manager Gary Caldwell’s squad.
Reflecting on his injury journey, Mendes Gomes stated, “It wasn’t easy. As soon as I knew the severity, I had to set my mind right as there was nothing I could do at that point.” He emphasized the importance of family support during his recovery. The initial weeks away from the training ground allowed him to focus on his family before he began the rigorous physical rehabilitation required to return to match fitness.
Mendes Gomes noted, “A few weeks staying at home with family helped me. Once I was in the gym, it was all about getting back as soon as possible. It’s been a long journey; I had to do a lot of gym work to make sure I got my body right.” Drawing from past experiences with injury, he remained determined and is now eager to contribute to Exeter City’s success.
As Mendes Gomes rejoins a squad that has recently found its momentum, Exeter City has secured three wins out of four matches during the festive period, lifting them to 15th place in League One. The competition remains tight, with only five points separating ninth from 21st place in the league. Defensively, the Grecians have been solid, with only one club conceding fewer goals this season.
Looking ahead to the upcoming fixture against Huddersfield, Mendes Gomes expressed confidence in the team’s abilities. “We are on a great run and want to take that momentum to Huddersfield. We have a brilliant squad and can do something special. It’s all about sticking together,” he said.
As the team gears up for a busy schedule, Mendes Gomes is hopeful for a starting position, stating, “As a player, you want to play every game. That’s the case with me as well. Hopefully, I can be in the starting eleven and show everyone what I can do. I’m just glad to be back helping the boys. That was my main focus.”
With his determination and the team’s growing confidence, Carlos Mendes Gomes is poised to make a significant impact in the coming matches, marking a promising chapter in his career at Exeter City.
