Crystal Palace Prepares for FA Cup Clash with Macclesfield
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is set to implement a rotation strategy as his team embarks on their FA Cup title defense against National League North side Macclesfield. The match, which will take place at the Moss Rose stadium, marks a significant opportunity for Glasner to balance squad fitness while integrating younger talent into the first team.
Traditionally, Glasner has maintained a consistent lineup. However, this season’s demanding schedule, which combines domestic league matches and European competitions, has necessitated adjustments. Notably, during a recent fixture against KuPS, the manager made several changes to his starting eleven. In contrast to last season, when few alterations were made during the FA Cup run, this time fans can expect to see at least one academy prospect take the field against Macclesfield.
Missing from the squad will be striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has been rested due to a minor knee injury. The club has decided against risking his participation on astroturf, prioritizing his long-term fitness. “We’ll have a little bit of rotation,” Glasner stated, confirming that key players including Marc Guehi, Adam Wharton, and Yeremy Pino will start the match. “Many who played in the last games will start, but we need to rotate a little bit because we have to accept the schedule and we have a responsibility to not get injured players again.”
The manager also highlighted the involvement of younger players in the upcoming match, indicating that one or two academy talents are likely to feature in the starting eleven. “Many young players will travel with us, and one or two will start,” he added. While Chris Riad has returned to training, he was part of the squad against Aston Villa and is not considered injured.
As the Premier League 2 season prepares to resume following a mid-season break, the focus shifts to the development of younger players. Centre-back Chadi Riad, who has been recovering from a year-long knee injury, is expected to play 45 minutes for the Under-21s as part of his rehabilitation. Meanwhile, players including Joél Drakes-Thomas, Dean Benamar, and Kaden Rodney have been training with the first-team squad to maintain squad depth during the pause in their season.
Glasner remarked on the necessity of retaining young talent within the first team, stating, “If we want tactical training, we need six from our Under-21s. We have 12 first-team players going to Macclesfield. JP and Jefferson Lerma return, which means we have 14 players.” This indicates that the integration of youth players is not just beneficial for their growth but crucial for the team’s strategic preparations.
The manager also commented on the ongoing recovery of back-up right wing-back Rio Cardines, who has been sidelined since November with a muscle injury but is now back in training. Conversely, striker Eddie Nketiah remains unavailable due to a hamstring injury, with Glasner cautious about providing a timeline for his return. “It could have been that he is back soon, now it looks maybe a bit longer,” said Glasner, emphasizing the importance of managing player fitness carefully.
As Crystal Palace gears up for this important FA Cup fixture, the blend of experienced internationals and promising young talent could provide a fresh dynamic on the pitch. The predicted starting eleven includes Benitez; Guehi, Lacroix, Canvot; Sosa, Wharton, Rodney, Johnson; Pino, Uche, and Drakes-Thomas, setting the stage for what promises to be an engaging contest against Macclesfield.
