Driver Paul Doyle Sentenced for Ploughing into Victory Parade Crowd
A driver who deliberately drove a vehicle into a crowd of over 100 people celebrating a local victory has been sentenced after admitting to multiple serious charges. Paul Doyle, 54, described as a “family man,” expressed regret in court, stating, “I’ve just ruined my family’s life,” as horrific footage from the incident was screened.
Doyle’s actions occurred on May 26, 2023, during a celebratory parade in Liverpool. He pleaded guilty to 31 offences, including dangerous driving and multiple counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. According to prosecutors, during a two-minute rampage, his nearly two-ton Ford Galaxy struck numerous pedestrians, including children, demonstrating a reckless disregard for human life.
Details of the Incident
The court heard that Doyle’s vehicle collided with people as he shouted aggressive remarks, indicating a loss of control and heightened anger. The prosecution described his behavior as a man “in a rage,” whose anger had completely taken hold of him. Eyewitness Daniel Barr, deemed a “hero” for intervening, recounted how he jumped into the back seat of Doyle’s vehicle and managed to put it into park, stopping the chaos after 16 seconds of terror.
The dashcam footage presented in court depicted the harrowing scene, showing individuals being thrown into the air and a pram overturned on the street. Victims and their families were visibly shaken as they watched the recordings that captured the moment of impact.
Paul Greaney KC, representing the prosecution, outlined the prosecution’s case, stating, “The defendant regarded himself as the most important person on Dale Street, and considered that everyone else needed to get out of his way.” The incident not only caused severe injuries but also instilled horror among attendees who had gathered for what was meant to be a day of celebration.
Legal Consequences
Doyle, who initially claimed he was motivated by kindness in attending the parade, ultimately admitted that his actions stemmed from a loss of temper. The youngest victim, six-month-old Teddy Eveson, was thrown approximately 15 feet from his pram during the crash. Doyle acknowledged his intent to harm, particularly children, during the chaos.
The court was informed that Doyle had opportunities to seek help from nearby police officers as he drove through the crowd. Instead, he continued his reckless behavior, eventually knocking over a female officer as he fled the scene. Following his arrest shortly after the incident, Doyle was charged later that week.
Paul Greaney emphasized the defendant’s responsibility, saying, “He was the one driving a 1.9-tonne vehicle.” The court proceedings have highlighted the severe consequences of Doyle’s actions, which resulted in life-altering injuries to numerous victims, with the prosecution asserting that the day turned from joy to horror in mere moments.
As the sentencing hearing continues, the court will consider the extent of Doyle’s actions and the lasting impact on the victims and their families.
