England’s Aggressive Start Secures Boxing Day Test Triumph
England’s early aggression in their run chase proved decisive as they secured a four-wicket victory over Australia in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26, 2025. The team successfully chased down a target of 175 runs, with Zak Crawley’s impactful shot in the fourth over setting the tone for their successful innings.
Crawley’s powerful six, struck back over the head of Australian bowler Michael Neser, emerged as a pivotal moment in the match. While Harry Brook’s flick to seal the victory garnered attention, it was Crawley’s early display of confidence that helped establish a solid foundation for England’s chase. The opening partnership between Crawley and Ben Duckett was crucial, especially considering their struggles earlier in the series. Their fourth-innings stand of 51 runs at the MCG marked their highest partnership of the tour and showcased their ability to perform under pressure.
The match was characterized by an unpredictable nature, with the highest partnership throughout the game being the 52-run collaboration between Cameron Green and Neser in Australia’s first innings. England’s captain, Ben Stokes, noted the significance of the opening partnership, stating, “That opening partnership between Zak and Ducky was a huge, huge reason as to why we chased that total down.”
Crawley’s six not only gained immediate runs but also had a longer-term effect on the game. By landing just in front of the LED advertising boards, the shot contributed to softening the seam of the new ball, which in turn impacted the Australian bowling attack. Australian batsman Steven Smith acknowledged this shift, noting, “A couple of their heavy blows softened our seam quite a bit and probably didn’t offer quite as much as it had for the rest of the game after that.”
This tactical approach by England to target the new ball has been a recurring strategy in their white-ball cricket, as players have previously cited the influence of LED boards on ball condition. In a past Test at Trent Bridge, a similar event allowed West Indies’ Mikyle Louis to reverse-swing the ball after hitting it into the boards.
Stokes praised the aggressive mindset of his players, emphasizing the importance of applying pressure from the start. “Your best possible way of being successful out there was looking to be very proactive against a very, very good bowling attack,” he said, highlighting the necessity of not allowing bowlers to dictate play.
Crawley concluded the innings with 37 runs from 48 balls, making him England’s leading run-scorer in the series with a total of 256 runs, despite a challenging start in the opening Test. His partnership with Duckett allowed for effective rotation of the strike, which became vital as the innings progressed.
The English strategy included a surprising decision to send Brydon Carse in at No. 3, a position he had not played before in the series. Although Carse scored only six runs, his brief innings provided a crucial period for England’s specialist batters to face a slightly older ball, which is generally easier to play than a new one.
Stokes elaborated on the reasoning behind this decision, saying, “We went with an idea of sending someone who’s got talent with the bat and a very good eye for hitting the ball.” Although it did not yield significant runs, the intent was clear: to build on the momentum established by the opening pair.
With this victory, England celebrated their first Test win in Australia in 15 years, marking a significant milestone in their ICC World Test Championship campaign. The combination of early aggression, strategic shot selection, and adaptability under pressure proved vital in overcoming a challenging Australian bowling attack, setting a promising tone for the remainder of the series.
