Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has acknowledged the difficulties faced by Lewis Hamilton in his inaugural season with the team. Vasseur admitted he underestimated the challenges that come with such a significant transition, particularly for a driver with Hamilton’s extensive experience. The seven-time champion joined Ferrari from Mercedes at the beginning of the year, but his hopes of competing for victories quickly faded. Hamilton described his season as a “nightmare,” as he failed to secure a podium finish for the first time in his 19-year career.

Throughout the season, Hamilton was outqualified by his teammate Charles Leclerc 19 times to five. Vasseur remarked that Hamilton often missed out on better results by mere fractions of a second. He recognized that the adaptation to Ferrari’s system has proven to be a more significant challenge than he initially expected. “I think it was difficult for Lewis, and it’s too small a word probably,” Vasseur said. “After 20 years with Mercedes, it was a huge change.”

The team principal emphasized that the differences between Ferrari and Mercedes extend beyond the car itself. “Every single software is different, every single component is different, the people around him are different,” he noted. Vasseur highlighted that without full mastery of these details, even minor lapses could cost valuable time on the track. He pointed out that during qualifying, a mere tenth of a second often separates positions from fifth to fifteenth, illustrating the competitive nature of the current grid.

Vasseur stated that in order for Hamilton to reach his full potential in 2026, both the team and the driver must focus on improvement across various aspects. “I think that the mindset of the team and the mindset of the driver has to be that let’s try to do a better job everywhere,” he remarked. He stressed that improvement must come from all corners of the team, including how Hamilton extracts the best performance from the car.

The Ferrari principal elaborated that it is not merely a matter of finding a “magic bullet” component that is faster, but rather addressing multiple smaller issues. “When you are three tenths behind someone, it’s often about having ten topics where you are three hundredths slower,” he explained. By systematically tackling these small details, Vasseur believes the team can enhance their performance.

Looking forward, Vasseur expressed optimism that both Hamilton and Ferrari will improve their understanding of each other over time. This is particularly important given that Leclerc has built a rapport with the team over the past seven years. “Honestly, it’s also a matter of mindset, a matter of understanding each other,” he noted. Vasseur emphasized the importance of knowing Hamilton’s needs and preferences, just as he has learned with Leclerc.

As the team prepares for the future, the focus remains on collaboration and improvement. With the right adjustments, there is a belief within Ferrari that Hamilton can once again contend for victories. The upcoming years will be crucial for Hamilton as he navigates this new chapter of his illustrious career.
