Fortnite Producer Alex Spellman Set for World Darts Championship
The 2026 PDC World Darts Championship begins on December 11, 2026, at Alexandra Palace, and Alex Spellman is preparing to take the stage once again. The former Fortnite producer has qualified for his second appearance at this prestigious event following a remarkable career transition from the tech industry to professional darts.
Spellman made his debut at Alexandra Palace in 2023, where he faced a challenging first-round match against Ryan Joyce. Despite his early exit, he has earned another chance to showcase his talent after recently winning his second CDC continental event. This victory solidified his position in the upcoming championship, alongside his participation in the Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts scheduled for November 2026 in Wolverhampton.
From Gaming to Darts
Before immersing himself in the world of darts, Spellman worked at Epic Games, the renowned producer of popular titles including Fortnite, Gears of War, and Unreal Tournament. He began his career in information technology and programming, contributing to the infrastructure side of Epic Games just months before the launch of Fortnite.
Reflecting on his time in the gaming industry, Spellman stated, “I went to college for computer information systems. I worked in IT for a hardware company called Lowe’s and hated everything about it. My wife and I had always talked about making a change, so we bought a house two hours away, which forced me to find a new job.” His contract role at Epic Games eventually transitioned into a full-time position, where he spent around six years before turning his focus to darts.
A Surprising Turn in His Career
Spellman took up darts in 2008 during a bar tournament, where he discovered his potential for professional play. He recalls, “I didn’t really start playing until 2008. I had a board growing up, but we were just throwing at it without knowing the rules.” His initial involvement led to a lucrative experience during a blind draw tournament, where he earned more in a few hours than he did in a full day of minimum wage work.
Today, Spellman has achieved notable success in the sport, including four wins on the CDC Pro Tour. His qualification for the World Championship alone guarantees him £15,000, with the potential to earn an additional £10,000 if he wins his first match.
As the countdown to the championship begins, excitement builds around Spellman’s journey from gaming to darts. His story resonates with many, illustrating the possibilities of career reinvention and the pursuit of passion. With his sights set on performing well at Alexandra Palace, fans eagerly await Spellman’s next move in the world of darts.
