Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the upcoming Christmas Day game against the Detroit Lions due to a hairline fracture in his right hand. The injury, confirmed by head coach Kevin O’Connell on Tuesday, raises concerns about McCarthy’s availability for the final game of the regular season against the Green Bay Packers on January 7, 2024.

O’Connell indicated that the precise moment of the injury remains unclear, stating that he did not believe McCarthy was aware of when it occurred. Video analysis revealed that McCarthy sustained the injury during the second quarter of the recent match against the New York Giants. He collided with the helmet of defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, which resulted in the fracture. Following the game, McCarthy was seen wearing a latex glove on his injured hand.

This incident marks the seventh game McCarthy has missed this season, attributed to three different injuries. Earlier in the season, a right high ankle sprain sidelined him for five games, and he missed an additional game while in concussion protocol. His rookie season in 2024 was also cut short due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.

In McCarthy’s absence, Max Brosmer will take over as the starting quarterback. Brosmer’s performance will be critical as the Vikings aim to secure a favorable position heading into the playoffs.

The team has faced considerable challenges this season, with injuries affecting key players. The upcoming game against the Lions is particularly significant, as it will help shape the Vikings’ playoff prospects and overall momentum going into the final stretch of the season.
