Monaco’s CEO Acknowledges Struggles with Pogba’s Injury Woes
Monaco’s Chief Executive Officer Thiago Scuro has publicly acknowledged that the club’s plans for Paul Pogba are not unfolding as anticipated. Since joining AS Monaco last summer, the former star midfielder has participated in only 30 minutes of competitive play, primarily due to ongoing injuries. The 32-year-old’s struggles have been exacerbated by a left calf injury sustained during training, which has kept him off the pitch for a month.
Pogba’s arrival at Monaco was viewed as a chance for him to revitalize a career that has faced significant challenges, including a doping ban and a series of physical ailments. He joined the club on a two-year contract with hopes of reclaiming his status among the elite in football. Unfortunately, his debut was delayed until the end of November, and he has yet to make a meaningful impact in the current season, with Monaco currently positioned ninth in the league, a staggering 17 points adrift of the leaders.
In a recent statement, Scuro expressed concern over Pogba’s situation, stating, “The program and the plan for Paul is not working the way we expected in the beginning.” He noted that Pogba is understandably frustrated with his limited availability and is eager to increase his playing time. The CEO emphasized the importance of finding solutions to help Pogba return to competitive form.
In a moment that highlighted the emotional weight of his comeback, Pogba was visibly moved when he signed his contract with Monaco. Despite the club’s struggles this season, Scuro remains optimistic about Pogba’s potential return to form. He hinted at the existence of unspecified clauses in the midfielder’s contract that could impact his future at the club, saying, “If it does not work, for sure the parties can sit down in the summer and try to have another discussion.”
Pogba’s illustrious career is underscored by his achievements, including becoming the world’s most expensive player in 2016 when he transferred from Juventus to Manchester United for €105 million (approximately $116 million at the time). A key player for France, Pogba has made 91 appearances and scored 11 goals for his national team, contributing significantly to their victorious campaign in the 2018 World Cup.
As he aims to return to France’s national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup in North America, the path appears increasingly challenging. Pogba’s last appearance for the national team was nearly four years ago, and a lingering knee injury prevented him from participating in the 2022 tournament.
The former Manchester United midfielder’s career faced a major setback in February 2024 when he received a four-year ban from Italy’s anti-doping court after testing positive for testosterone. This ban was later reduced to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in October 2024, but the damage to his career had already been done.
As the situation develops, both Pogba and Monaco hope for a turnaround. The club’s commitment to supporting Pogba remains strong, but the future will require careful consideration as they navigate this challenging chapter.
