Montenegro’s women’s handball team opened their World Championship campaign with a strong victory against the Faroe Islands, securing a 32-27 win. The match showcased standout performances, particularly from goalkeeper Armel Atingre, who achieved an impressive save rate of 44.7%, stopping eight clear shots in the first half alone.

The Montenegrin team, often referred to as the “Lions,” asserted their status as favorites right from the start. Despite leading throughout the match, they faced challenges, particularly in defense, as the Faroe Islands employed an aggressive attacking strategy using seven players at times. The Faroe Islands made a notable push in the first half, narrowing the score to 13-9 by the 22nd minute, but Montenegro remained resilient.

Atingre’s performance was pivotal in maintaining the lead, with her remarkable saves helping to keep the game in Montenegro’s favor. Alongside her, young talent Marija Marsenić contributed by stopping two out of three penalty shots in the first half. Despite the victory, Montenegro could have increased their lead had they capitalized on several clear scoring opportunities, missing the goal six times.

Second Half Surge

The second half saw Montenegro’s coach Suzana Lazović make strategic adjustments, leading to a more fluid play. Katarina Džaferović finished the first half with four goals and continued her scoring in the second, while Jelena Vukčević added two quick goals shortly after the break. This shift in momentum allowed Montenegro to extend their lead to 21-15.

Defensively, Montenegro tightened up, conceding only two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half. However, the Faroe Islands fought back, reducing a six-goal deficit to just four at 27-23 late in the game. Despite their efforts, they could not capitalize on their numerical advantage during crucial moments.

As the match progressed, Montenegro maintained control. Anastasija Marsenić made a critical play by stealing the ball and setting up Dijana Trivić for a goal that pushed the score to 31-26. Vukčević emerged as Montenegro’s top scorer, netting five goals, supported by Džaferović, Godeč, and Jauković, who each contributed four goals.

Montenegro’s next challenge comes swiftly as they prepare to face Paraguay in two days, aiming to build on their strong start in the championship. This victory not only sets a positive tone for the tournament but also highlights areas for improvement as the team strives for greater defensive efficiency.
