NASCAR Community Mourns Greg Biffle and Family at Memorial Service
On December 8, 2023, hundreds gathered at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, to honor the memory of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and six others who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash the previous month. Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their children Emma, aged 14, and Ryder, aged 5, were among the victims of the crash which occurred shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport.
The Cessna C550, carrying Biffle’s family and three others, reportedly caught fire upon impact as it attempted to return to the airport. The crash, which took place just before Christmas, sent shockwaves through the NASCAR community, mourning not only the loss of a beloved driver but also the family he cherished.
Remembering a Hero
During the memorial service, friends and family shared heartfelt tributes to Biffle, who was celebrated as one of NASCAR’s top 75 drivers. Driver and influencer Garrett Mitchell, known as “Cleetus McFarland,” spoke passionately about Biffle’s legacy. “We have all been saying, ‘Be like Biff’ since we lost our hero,” he shared with attendees. “That means taking opportunities when you see them, showing up for your friends and family, and making the world a better place.”
Biffle, who was 55 years old, had a distinguished 18-year career in NASCAR, earning accolades as a Hall of Fame nominee. He was also recognized for his humanitarian efforts, notably as a helicopter pilot delivering aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
Impact and Legacy
Jordyn Biffle, the niece of Greg, recounted cherished memories of her family, highlighting the strong bond they shared. “Their lives remind us that what matters isn’t how long we are here but how we use the time we are given and how fiercely we love while we are here,” she remarked. The tribute included seven wreaths on stage, symbolizing each life lost in the tragedy.
Outside the coliseum, fans paid their respects by viewing three race cars that Biffle drove during his career. Inside, a video screen displayed images of the seven victims, reinforcing the deep impact of their loss on the community.
Among the attendees was Dylan Zirkle, who worked with Biffle at Roush Racing as a pit support employee. He reflected on Biffle’s approachable nature and the lasting impression he left. “Greg was always a really good guy,” Zirkle stated. “You could always talk to him about anything.”
In the wake of the tragic events, the NASCAR community has faced additional challenges. Just days after the crash, a fire destroyed the home of fellow driver Denny Hamlin, resulting in the loss of his father and leaving his mother hospitalized. Additionally, authorities are investigating a burglary at Biffle’s home in Mooresville, where approximately $30,000 in cash and memorabilia were stolen.
As part of the public tribute, Mitchell announced plans to perform a burnout near Biffle’s marker along the North Carolina Auto Racing Walk of Fame in Mooresville, further celebrating the life and legacy of Greg Biffle.
