Nigeria Football Federation Welcomes Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed enthusiasm over the nationality switch of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who will now represent Nigeria at international levels. This decision adds significant depth to the national team’s goalkeeping options, as the NFF continues to seek talented players to enhance its roster.
According to Dr. Ademola Olajire, NFF Director of Communications, “The NFF is always excited to have another good player committing to and providing an option in a particular position.” He emphasized the organization’s satisfaction with Okonkwo’s commitment, highlighting the goalkeeper’s potential to strengthen the team’s performance.
Okonkwo, aged 24, previously represented England at various youth levels between 2015 and 2018, participating in the U15, U16, U17, and U18 squads. His last appearance for England’s U18 side occurred in 2019, with no subsequent call-ups. As reported by OwnGoalNigeria, his decision to switch nationalities followed a meeting with Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup tournament in June. Chelle encouraged Okonkwo to pursue a nationality switch and obtain a Nigerian passport.
While the transition was finalized too late for Okonkwo to participate in the current campaign, he will be available for the qualification matches for the 2027 African Cup of Nations, scheduled from March through November. The Nigerian national team recently faced disappointment by failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Okonkwo’s club career has seen him gain valuable experience through loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz. In the summer of 2023, he joined Wrexham on loan, stepping in after the retirement of veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster. His contributions have been pivotal in Wrexham’s rise, helping the club finish second in League Two. Following a successful loan period, Okonkwo made a permanent transfer to Wrexham in 2024.
He has made a significant impact in his role, recording 19 clean sheets in 33 League One appearances during the last season, conceding just 23 goals. His efforts helped Wrexham achieve consecutive promotions from League Two to the Championship. This season, he has maintained strong form with six clean sheets in 20 Championship matches, contributing to the team’s robust performance.
Wrexham currently sits 10th in the Championship, four points away from the playoff positions. Their recent 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day featured Okonkwo keeping a clean sheet, marking the club’s third consecutive win. As Wrexham aims for a remarkable fourth straight promotion, Okonkwo’s presence in goal will be crucial in their ongoing campaign.
With Okonkwo’s switch to the Nigerian national team, the NFF is optimistic about the future, and fans will be eager to see how this new chapter unfolds in the football careers of both the player and the national team.
