Portsmouth Eyes Lyndon Dykes Amid Birmingham City Transfer Buzz
Portsmouth FC has made a promising start to their second season in the Championship after securing promotion from League One in 2024. However, the club faces challenges as they seek to bolster their attacking options. Following a narrow loss to Norwich City on August 12, 2023, Portsmouth is reportedly considering a move for striker Lyndon Dykes from Birmingham City, especially as the latter pursues another forward.
Portsmouth kicked off the new season with a 1-0 victory against Oxford United, thanks to an impressive finish from Adrian Segecic. Yet, their momentum was halted in the Carabao Cup with a home defeat to Reading. The team struggled again at Fratton Park, where they fell 2-1 to Norwich City, despite a spirited comeback effort. With key player Colby Bishop sidelined due to a minor injury, the need for an experienced striker has become increasingly urgent.
Dykes, who has Championship experience and international pedigree, could fill this gap effectively. Currently, Birmingham City, according to reports, is interested in acquiring Aleksandar Mitrovic, the ex-Fulham striker now at Al Hilal, which may lead to Dykes being surplus to requirements at St. Andrew’s. As Birmingham strengthens its offensive lineup with new signings like Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen and other established talents, Dykes could find himself with limited opportunities.
Dykes has proven himself as a capable goal scorer, netting 37 goals in 165 appearances for Queen’s Park Rangers between 2020 and 2024, along with nine goals in 42 matches for the Scotland national team. His addition to Portsmouth could provide much-needed support for Bishop and help ease the pressure on young forwards such as Thomas Waddingham, who is still developing his skills.
At present, Portsmouth’s attacking options are limited. Waddingham has recorded only 16 senior goals, while Florian Bianchini scored just three in his previous season. Additionally, both Kusini Yengi and Christian Saydee struggled to find the net last season, which led to their departures this summer. Dykes would not only bring valuable experience but also serve as a potential backup to Bishop, particularly in challenging matches where goals are hard to come by.
As the transfer window draws to a close, Portsmouth may need to act quickly if they wish to secure Dykes. With Birmingham City likely to finalize their own transfers soon, the time is ripe for Portsmouth to explore this opportunity. Dykes could become an essential asset, providing the team with depth and versatility in their attacking lineup.
In summary, Portsmouth’s pursuit of Lyndon Dykes reflects a strategic move to enhance their offensive capabilities as they navigate the competitive landscape of the Championship. The club aims to ensure they remain resilient in their quest for success this season, making this potential transfer one to watch closely.
