Priest Faces Restrictions After Allegations of Child Harassment

A priest from Montenegro, identified as B.C., has been placed under judicial supervision following allegations of sexual harassment against his two minor children. The Basic Court in Cetinje imposed measures prohibiting him from contacting his ex-wife, N.K., and their children, as well as restricting his movement from his place of residence.

These measures were enforced after B.C. was detained for 72 hours by the Special State Prosecutor’s Office (ODT) in Cetinje. The arrest occurred on October 3, 2023, after N.K. reported the alleged harassment. According to the ODT, the priest, affiliated with the Mitropolija Crnogorsko Primorska, is accused of sexually harassing his two children.

Following the initial detention, the court determined the need for ongoing supervision and restrictions on B.C.. The measures include a ban on approaching or meeting with his former spouse and children, as confirmed by the ODT.

The case has drawn attention from child protection authorities. The JU Centar za socijalni rad Cetinje has stated they were notified by the ODT about the allegations. The Centre has emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of children, as mandated by the laws of Montenegro.

In their response, the Centre noted, “In accordance with all applicable laws and international standards concerning child protection, urgent measures have been implemented to address the needs of the children involved.” They also pointed out that due to legal obligations, they cannot disclose the identities of those involved or specific details about ongoing proceedings.

Furthermore, the Centre has taken proactive steps, which include notifying relevant institutions about the need for child protection and conducting expert assessments regarding parental rights. They have highlighted that their activities aim to protect children’s rights and ensure their safety.

Documents indicate that N.K. separated from B.C. in 2019 after reportedly fleeing with their children due to alleged psychological and physical abuse. It was noted that she spent time in a safe house in 2020 with the children, seeking refuge from the violence.

The police arrested B.C. as part of an ongoing investigation into the serious allegations against him. The community is closely monitoring developments in this distressing case, which underscores the critical issues surrounding child safety and welfare in Montenegro.
