Salah Issues Apology to Liverpool Teammates After Controversy
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has reportedly apologised to his teammates following a controversial interview where he expressed his frustration with the club. The Egyptian international described feeling “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and indicated a breakdown in his relationship with head coach Arne Slot. His remarks came in the wake of a challenging period for the club, particularly after he was left on the bench during a 3-3 draw against Leeds United on December 6, 2023.
In a conversation with Sky Sports, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones confirmed that Salah addressed the team, saying, “if I’ve affected anybody or made you feel any sort of way, I apologise.” Jones portrayed Salah as a strong individual who maintains a positive demeanor even amid adversity. “He was the exact same Mo. He had a big smile on his face and everybody was exactly the same with him,” Jones added.
Salah’s comments followed a series of events that raised questions about his future at Liverpool. After being sidelined for the match against Leeds, he was also left out of the starting lineup during a Champions League victory against Inter Milan. He returned as a substitute in a subsequent home win against Brighton, where he assisted in scoring Liverpool’s second goal. This prompted the home crowd to chant his name, reflecting the fans’ unwavering support.
With the January transfer window approaching, speculation about Salah’s future has intensified, particularly with interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelled Salah’s comments as a “disgrace,” while ex-striker Chris Sutton described the situation as causing “carnage” within the club.
In response to the controversy, head coach Arne Slot stated, “we moved on,” signalling the team’s intent to put the matter behind them. Jones echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that any frustration from players, including himself, stemmed from a desire to win and was never intended to disrupt team unity.
“I get that there are certain ways you can go about things,” Jones explained. “But if a lad’s fine to just be on the bench and he doesn’t want to play and help the team, then I think that’s more of an issue.” He reassured fans that the team is now focused and gelling well together, looking forward to upcoming matches, including their fixture against Tottenham.
As Salah prepares to join the Egyptian national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool fans will be keenly watching how the situation develops in the coming weeks. With tensions easing, the hope is that the team can regain their form and push for a successful season.
